History
Created as a commercial-based version of PBS, A&E originally focused on biographies, art programming, British drama imports, and documentary series, with its flagship shows being Biography (spun into a separate channel in 1999) and anthology series A&E Stage, airing telecasts of stage plays and concerts. Eventually it came to broadcast several crime documentary series, including – among others – the critically acclaimed Cold Case Files (1999–2006) and The First 48 (since 2004)
Today, the art programming has vanished, being replaced mainly by reality series such as Dog the Bounty Hunter, Intervention, and Gene Simmons Family Jewels. Other long-running non-scripted series included Flip This House, Criss Angel: Mindfreak, and Paranormal State.
In the mid 1990s, A&E begun producing original movies and mini-series, and in 2001 its first two original scripted full-length series premiered: Sidney Lumet's legal drama 100 Centre Street, and film noir series A Nero Wolfe Mystery, based on the stories by Rex Stout, both airing for two seasons. Since 2008, when The Cleaner premiered, the network has continued to put out new original drama series.
