Basic Information
Ozai is the younger brother to Iroh, son to Fire Lord Azulon, husband of Ursa and father to Zuko and Azula.
In his younger years he searched for the Avatar, like his father and his grandfather before him. But, like them, he was unsuccessful in his search.
When Iroh abandons his campaign to conquer the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se, Ozai asks his father to revoke his older brother’s birthright and name him heir to the throne. Although we are show Azulon refusing his sons request, Ozai is still named Fire Lord after his father mysteriously dies later evening. Ursa disappears the same night, for reasons yet to be revealed.
Years later, Zuko sits in on a meeting of commanders in the Fire Lord’s War Room and objects to a strategy which hinges on sacrificing a large number of new troops. By doing so he dishonors his father and is forced to face him in agni kai. Zuko refuses to fight and as a result, Ozai publicly scars his son and banishes him from the Fire Nation.
Currently, he is directing the war against the Earth Kingdom and is planning to use the power of Sozin’s Comet to finally conquer the world.
Character History
- Fire Lord Ozai first appears in a flashback, in Book 1, Chapter 12 (The Storm) where he publicly scars his son Prince Zuko and banishes him.
- Ozai is see in silhouette in the final moments of the Book 1 conclusion, Chapter 20 (The Siege of the North, Part 2). He orders Azula to track down her brother and uncle as traitors.
- Ozai is shown in the Book 2, Chapter 7 (Zuko Alone) flashback. He asks his father to name him heir and is punished as a result. Later, he is named Fire Lord after his father dies, apparently his last dying wish.
