Plot Overview

The Doctor, Rose, and Jack all find themselves transported to Satellite Five, each into a different reality show game. However, the consequences of getting voted out of these reality shows are deadly.

After escaping the Big Brother house, the Doctor goes on a search for Rose, who's stuck in a version of The Weakest Link. Just before he arrives, she loses the show and is about to be disintigrated when the Doctor comes running into the room with Jack (who has escaped his own version of Extreme Makeover) and a fellow contestant from the Big Brother house, Lynda. Rose runs to the Doctor to warn him about the Anne Droid and is disintigrated in front of his eyes.

Griving and furious, the Doctor seeks out Rose's murder and discovers a more sinister plot at Satellite Five than he ever suspected. Somebody's been playing a long game, influencing the course of human history for hundreds of years. That same someone isn't killing contestants but transporting them somewhere else in space.

Tracing the signal, the Doctor sees a fleet of Dalek ships, all ready to invade Earth. When the Daleks give him an ultimatum - stand aside or let Rose die - he refuses, vowing to rescue her and blow the Daleks out of the sky.

Trivia

The Show

  • The Doctor faces the consequences of his actions, as he realizes the negative repercussions that resulted from his defeat of the Mighty Jagrafess in The Long Game.

Behind the Scenes

Allusions and References

  • President Schwarzenegger: Refers to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Austrian-born actor and Governor of California. Though currently ineligible to become President by law (only native citizens may be elected President of the United States), there are those who support an amendment to the Constitution to change this law.
  • Torchwood: Mentioned several times in the Doctor Who series, Torchwood is a mysterious organization with an unclear purpose (to this point in the Doctor Who series). At the end of this season, Torchwood became a spinoff series, starring Captain Jack Harkness as the leader of the group.

Memorable Moments

  • Rose gets disintigrated in front of the Doctor's eyes.
  • The Doctor discovers the disintigrator beam is actually a transmitter beam and find the coordinates where all the voted-out contestants are sent. He sees an enormous Dalek Fleet.
  • The Doctor vows to save Rose from the middle of the Dalek Fleet, though he has no weapons and no plan.

Quotes

  • Big Brother Computer: You are live on Channel 44,000. Please do not swear.
The Doctor: You have got to be kidding.
  • Rose Tyler: Oh, my God, the android! The Anne...droid!
Anne Droid: Welcome to The Weakest Link!
  • Android: Just stand still and let the defabricator work its magic.
Captain Jack Harkness: What's the defabricator? (The android hits him with a beam and his clothes disappear.) Okay. Defabricator. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Am I naked in front of millions of viewers?
    Androids: Absolutely!
Jack: Ladies...your viewing figures just went up.
  • The Doctor: Well, here's the latest update from the Big Brother house. I'm getting out. I'm gonna find my friends. And then I'm gonna find you.
  • Lynda Moss: She's been evicted. From life.
  • Jack: Hold on, ladies. I don't want to have to shoot either of you.
    Android 1: But you're unarmed!
Android 2: You're naked! (He pulls a tiny gun out and points it at the androids.) But that's a Compact Laser Deluxe!
Android 1: Where were you hiding that?
Jack: You really don't want to know.
  • The Doctor: Lynda, you're sweet. From what I've seen of your world, do you think anybody votes for sweet?
  • Lynda: 100 years ago. You were here a hundred years ago.
    The Doctor: Yes.
Lynda: You're looking good on it.
    The Doctor: I moisturize.
  • The Doctor: I'm just a traveller wandering past. Believe it or not, all I'm after is a quiet life.
  • Lynda: Maybe I could come with you.
    The Doctor: Maybe you could.
Lynda: I wouldn't get in the way.
The Doctor: I wouldn't mind if you did.
  • Jack: Well, ladies, the pleasure was all mine. Which is the only thing that matters, in the end!
  • The Doctor: History's gone wrong. Again! This should be the Fourth Great and Bountiful Human Empire! I don't understand. Last time I was here, I put it right.
Lynda: No, but that's when it all went wrong. 100 years ago. Like you said, all the news channels, they just shut down overnight.
The Doctor: But that was me. I did that.
Lynda: There was nothing left in their place! No information! The whole planet just froze. The government, the economy, they collapsed. That was the start of it! 100 years of hell.
  • The Doctor: I made this world.
  • The Doctor: Do you mind flirting outside?
Jack: I was just saying hello!
The Doctor: For you, that's flirting.
    Lynda: I'm not complaining.
  • Jack: You killed her! Your stupid freaking game show killed her!
  • Jack: (Holding up guns) Do I look like an "out of bounds" sort of guy?
  • Woman: The staff are terrified!
The Doctor: That's the same staff who execute hundreds of contestants every day?
Woman: That's not our fault; we're just doing our jobs.
The Doctor: And with that sentence, you just lost the right to even talk to me! Now back off!
  • The Doctor: My friend died inside your games!
    Controller: Doesn't matter.
The Doctor: Don't you dare tell me that!
  • The Doctor: (To Jack, who's flirting...again) There's a time and a place.
  • Jack: That's impossible. I know those ships. They were destroyed.
    The Doctor: Obviously they survived.
  • The Doctor: 200 ships. More than 2,000 on board each one. That's just about half a million of them. ... Daleks.
  • Dalek: I will talk to the Doctor!
The Doctor: Oh, will you? That's nice. Hello!
  • Dalek: You will obey or she will be exterminated!
    The Doctor: No.
    Dalek: Explain yourself.
    The Doctor: I said, no.
Dalek: What is the meaning of this negative?
    The Doctor: It means no.
Dalek: But she will be destroyed!
The Doctor: No, 'cause this is what I'm gonna do! I'm gonna rescue her! I'm gonna save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek Fleet, and then I'm gonna save the Earth. And then, just to finish off, I'm gonna wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky!
Dalek: But you have no weapons! No defences! No plan!
The Doctor: Yeah. And doesn't that scare you to death? Rose?
    Rose: Yes, Doctor?
The Doctor: I'm coming to get you!
