Trivia
The Show
- Jelly babies, which would become a trademark of The Fourth Doctor, make their debut in this serial.
Behind the Scenes
- While Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln wrote the serial, it was heavily rewritten by script editor Derrick Sherwin with his assistant Terrance Dicks. Sherwin felt that Haisman and Lincoln's scripts had too many satirical elements at the expense of incident and requested changes which the writers were reluctant to make. Producer Peter Bryant informed the two writers that they would not be required to provide the final episode, although they would be paid in full for their efforts. The two no longer wanted to be credited with the serial, requesting the pseudonym Norman Ashby, after their fathers-in-law.
- The Quarks were created to be the next merchandisable monster for the show after the Daleks. However, a falling out between the writers and the production led to this being their sole appearance. Things got so heated that Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln even attempted to legally prevent the serial from airing.
- While it has been said that this was Patrick Troughton's favourite of his Doctor's story, there has been no evidence of this. In fact, he reportedly admitted to agreeing with a fan who called it dull. That said, he did request a showing of The Dominators at his birthday celebration for a March 27, 1987 convention in Columbus, Georgia the day before he died.

Quotes
- Jamie: Doctor, come on! The whole place is gonna blow up!
- The Doctor: Oh, it's quite alright, Jamie. The planet is quite safe. There's just going to be a localised volcanic eruption that only'll affect the island.
- Jamie: Maybe so, but we happen to be on the island.
- The Doctor: Oh, my word!
