InuYasha is a fantasy anime program based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi, that was published regularly in Weekly Shonen Sunday. The television program initially concluded in 2004 due to the storyline catching up to the manga. Shortly after the manga series ended in 2008, a continuation of the anime was commissioned to adapt the final 21 InuYasha manga volumes.

Four-hundred years ago the priestess Kikyo was the guardian of the Sacred Jewel (also called the "Shikon Jewel" or "Jewel of Four Souls"), a magical bauble capable of granting enormous power to demons. Because of this, the jewel is highly sought after by demonic forces. One day Kikyo is betrayed by InuYasha, a half-human, half-dog-demon who wants to use the jewel to make himself a full demon. Kikyo is fatally wounded in the theft, but not before managing to trap InuYasha against a tree. Kikyo's body is burned with the jewel, which then disappears.

In the present day, Kagome Higurashi is living at her family's shrine, little knowing that she is the reincarnation of Kikyo — and the Sacred Jewel is hidden inside her! A demon pulls her down into the family's well, drawing her into the past, where her only recourse for protection against the demons seeking the jewel is to free InuYasha from the tree. While retrieving the jewel from a demon that manages to snatch it away, Kagome accidentally shatters the jewel, scattering the pieces throughout the countryside. It's up to Kagome and InuYasha to gather all the pieces and reassemble the Sacred Jewel.

As the two travel throughout feudal-era Japan it becomes apparent that InuYasha was set up, and that his and Kikyo's troubles were actually caused by a powerful demon called Naraku. They befriend several other travelers with their own grudges against Naraku, such as the lecherous monk Miroku and the demon hunter Sango. And there are plenty of other problems to deal with along the way, like InuYasha's evil brother, a proud wolf demon in love with Kagome, a resurrected priestess with a grudge, and the fact that Kagome still has to study for her school exams in the present day!

The anime was licensed for North American release by Viz Media, who also release the English language InuYasha manga, and began broadcasting an English dub on Adult Swim in 2002.
