Plot Overview

Matlock returns to his home town of Mount Harlan for the city's bicentennial celebration, as does another former resident, a famous author who offends a number of prominent townspeople with his questions. When the author is slain, a young man who fought with him a day before the murder is arrested and calls on Ben to defend him.

A friend of murdered author Noel Ferguson dies in a suspicious auto accident, and Matlock discovers that both dead men, along with another friend, witnessed a murder 15 years before. A mysterious tattoo on the first victim's shoulder is key to solving the case.
