In the United States, premium channels are networks which cable subscribers must separately order from their basic cable packages. Because premium channels such as HBO, Showtime and Cinemax make their money primarily through subscription costs, they do not require commercial sponsors, and most of their programming airs without commercials and without editing for adult content.
