History

In September 1996, 1155636 Ontario, Inc. (controlled by Baton Broadcasting, with the remaining interests held by Shaw Cable, Astral Broadcasting, and Les Films Rozon Inc.) was granted a television broadcasting license by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission for The Comedy Network.

The channel was officially launched on October 17, 1997 with the slogan Time Well Wasted, which was similar to A&E's then-slogan Time Well Spent. The slogan was used until November 1, 2011, when the network was overhauled.

Through the many acquisitions that the network went through over the years, Shaw, Astral, and Les Films Rozon had sold their interest in the service to Baton, which, in 2001, became known as Bell Globemedia, and later renamed to CTVglobemedia in 2007. In 2011, the company was renamed again to Bell Media following its acquisition by Bell Canada.

In August 2013, the CRTC denied an amendment that allowed The Comedy Network to run more younger-oriented shows, especially animated shows, as it would eventually lead to competition with Teletoon and BiteTV. Because the competition happened, several of the shows, including Conan and several Comedy Central shows, were moved to sister channel MuchMusic.

On September 12, 2019, the channel will rebrand as CTV Comedy.
