The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy is about two kids that befriend the Grim Reaper. It was developed as a pilot short subject, Meet The Reaper, as part of a viewer vote contest. Meet the Reaper was the very final production of the Hanna-Barbera studio, with Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank assuming production afterwards. The idiot named Billy and the snotty girl named Mandy, who win a bet with the Grim Reaper over a sick hamster, making him have to be their best friend forever!
In "Meet The Reaper," Billy's hamster Mr. Snuggles is about to breathe its last, just as Mandy insists on having an audience with it. The Grim Reaper--the very entity of death itself, and with a Jamaican accent--appears to claim the hamster's soul. Mandy refuses to let the Reaper take Mr. Snuggles, so a challenge is issued. Grim takes the two children to Limbo to compete in (what else?) a limbo contest. If the Reaper wins, he gets the hamster. If the kids win, then the Reaper has to be their best friend forever. Just as it looks as if victory is at hand for the Reaper, Mandy gives the command "kiss kiss," causing Mr. Snuggles to go spastic and jump into the Reaper's eye socket and make him lose the contest.
The series is a grotesque and grossout comedy of manners and errors with Grim (as the Reaper is informally known) having to kowtow to Billy and Mandy's wishes--usually Mandy's. And when they're not involved in that, some episodes take place in the netherworld, while other above-the-ground scenarios involve Mandy's school rival Mindy, spectral exterminator Hoss Delagdo, the goddess of chaos Eris, the school bully Sperg, Billy's mom and dad (Gladys, a Tourette Syndrome headcase, and Harold, showing that the leaf doesn't fall far from the tree) and Mandy's hopeless admirer Irwin.
At the beginning, Mandy was merely moody. But as the series was approaching its final seasons, she became megalomaniacal. Throughout, Mandy's emotion were pretty much in concrete. She never laughs. She usually doesn't smile out of free will but she will flash a knowing grin. She never cried up until the final season episode "Heartburn," where she fights with her inner sanity over the prospect of her falling in love with Irwin.
In 2007, a full-length movie released to DVD and aired on Cartoon Network was presented. Billy & Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure had Grim stripped of his powers thanks to the Boogey Man (who Grim bested earlier in a test of scares). He, along with Billy, Mandy and Irwin, have to use their wits to race the Boogey Man to obtain an artifact called the Hand of Horror.
A pilot for a proposed spinoff, Underfist, aired in October of 2008.
