1996 Telecommunications Act

The 1996 Telecommunications Act was a bill passed in the mid-90’s that eased the restrictions on television and radio ownership, allowing large companies to acquire and maintain ownership on a loosely limited number of stations within a market. Nationwide the number was unlimited. The restrictions were originally created to “prevent monopolistic control of media in a local market” (Croteau 91).
