During the 2006 Olympics the Networks of NBC aired an unprecedented 418 hours of coverage across 5 networks. Not only did they air more total coverage they aired more live coverage than any previous Winter Games despite the six-hour time difference between the US East Coast and Italy. The coverage average out to over 24.5 hours of coverage across all networks. All games of the Men's and Women's Ice Hockey tournaments were shown live. This was the first time the entire Women's tournament was shown on US television. All Team USA Hockey games were shown live and commercial free. A total of 26 Curling matches (15 live) were shown on NBC's cable networks including all Team USA matches. Bob Costas returned as NBC's primetime Olympic host.

The 2006 Olympics were the first to be simulcast in HDTV and as such had more HDTV coverage than any previous Olympics Summer or Winter. Figure Skating, Hockey, Long and Short Track Speed Skating, Ski Jumping, Freestyle Aerials and Moguls, and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies were presented in 1080i because the host broadcaster has wired those venues for high definition. For other events a 16:9 signal was upconverted for air. In addition to the record HD coverage for the first time NBC offered some Olympic coverage as Video On Demand on participating cable and satellite providers as well as on the internet through both NBCOlympics.com and Google Video. The available video consited of mostly highlights and recaps.
