History

While originally a radio broadcaster, NBC was granted the first commercial television license in the U.S. and started to broadcast television programming in the 1940s. By 1963, NBC was the first company to broadcast most of their programs in color, with Bonanza in 1959, being the first all-color program.

Throughout its history the NBC network has been identifiable by prominent audio and visual trademarks. First used in radio, the NBC three-note sound 'jingle' (consisting of the notes: G E C) has the distinguishment of the first audio trademark accepted by the U.S. Patent Office. NBC is also associated with the visual of a peacock. Having its origins in NBC's 1959 color broadcasting tests, the 'peacock' logo has become a widely recognized symbol of the company.

In addition to its television network, NBC's media assets include CNBC, MSNBC, Bravo and the Spanish-language network Telemundo. NBC and its components were bought by cable conglomerate Comcast.
