Plot Overview

Jonesy and Nikki make plans for a movie date at the Gigantoplex to see a new action/romantic flick, True Love and Fist Fights, but their enjoyment of the movie is spoiled when their date gets interrupted by the arrival of Caitlin, Jen, Wyatt and Jude. Wyatt has difficulty opening a bag of candy (which spills all over the gang when he finally gets it open) and Caitlin and Jen ask Jonesy and Nikki how the movie is going, but the final straw comes when Jude's juvenile antics (attempting to start a food fight during the movie) get the gang kicked out of the theatre. While the rest of the gang go get cleaned up in the theatre washrooms, Jonesy and Nikki, in need of alone time together, leave their friends behind and sneak off to El Sporto's, where they relax over a big plate of nachos—until Caitlin and company finally find the couple and join them. Having enough of the uninvited company, Jonesy and Nikki make it clear to Caitlin, Jen, Jude and Wyatt that the evening was supposed to be just for the two of them for their date, then the couple walks out, leaving the rest of the gang to finish the nachos.

The next day, Jonesy rents a romantic DVD (on the advice of Wayne) from Underground Video and heads with Nikki to the Garcia/Masterson house to watch it. Jonesy and Nikki's original plan to watch the movie in the living room does not pan out because Diego and Robbie, Jonesy's younger brothers, have plans of their own to watch a kung fu movie at 8:00 and they refuse to leave, so the couple instead go up to Jonesy's room to watch the movie on his TV. During the movie, Jonesy and Nikki twice attempt to kiss when Nikki's stomach acts up both times, and she excuses herself to use the bathroom—unfortunately, the upstairs bathroom is right next door to Jonesy's room, and she is unable to use the bathroom on the main floor because Jen's mother (the Garcia boys' stepmother) is taking a bath inside, leaving Nikki no choice but to use the upstairs bathroom.

Things begin going downhill for Nikki from there when she discovers that the bathroom door won't close properly until Jonesy (calling from his room) advises her to lean against the door for a moment to keep it closed. After that, Nikki turns on the bathroom sink faucet to cover up any embarassing noises and then sits down on the toilet, but turning on the tap does not work as Nikki begins passing gas loudly, much to the disgust of Jonesy as he clearly hears the farting noises coming from the bathroom (which he tries to cover up by plugging his ears, singing out loud and turning on his stereo). The bathroom door then swings open again unexpectedly and an embarrassed Nikki gets up to try to close it again, flushing the toilet before doing so—but she inadvertently left the end of a nearby roll of toilet paper in the toilet as she flushed it, pulling the entire roll into the toilet and plugging it.

Unsure what to do, Nikki calls Jen on her cell phone to ask for help, but Jen is with Caitlin, Jude and Wyatt at The Galleria's video arcade. Nikki tries to tell Jen what happened, but Jen is unable to take the call right away (due to her turn coming at the arcade game she and Jude are playing), so she hands off her phone to Caitlin, who proceeds to give Nikki advice that turns out useless in helping her fix the toilet (it turns out to be advice on makeup) and serves only to further frustrate Nikki. Cait then tells Jen about the plugged toilet, so Jen gets the phone back and tells Nikki to get the toilet plunger, which she uses on the toilet after turning on the shower (leaving a puzzled Jonesy to wonder why Nikki is taking a shower). Nikki appears to get the toilet unplugged successfully after she flushes it again, but disaster strikes when the toilet starts backing up and Nikki, suddenly panicking, jiggles the handle against the advice of Jen (who told her over the phone not to do so), causing the toilet to overflow and leaving very messy evidence of Nikki's upset stomach on the floor. Jen then tells Nikki to lift the lid off the toilet's water tank to stop the water, but the lid slips from Nikki's grasp and breaks when it hits the floor, and she slips and falls backward into the shower. By the time Jonesy gets to the bathroom to find out what's going on, a humiliated Nikki dashes past him and leaves the house, and he discovers the disaster zone the bathroom has become.

The memory of the bathroom incident on his mind the following day, Jonesy gets fired from his job as a washroom attendant at the Soft Rock Café when he tries to prevent a customer from using the facilities. The gang, all now knowing what happened at Jonesy and Jen's house, notice that Jonesy and Nikki are unable to face each other in the aftermath. Jonesy attempts to fix things between himself and Nikki, but the best he is able to do at that point is an awkward phone call to her at the Khaki Barn. When Jonesy returns the unfinished DVD to Underground Video and Wayne learns what happened, he gives Jonesy a speech about how women and men are no different when it comes to being gross and that women would not hold the same appeal to him that they once did now that he "knows the truth". Jen later learns about what Wayne said and she tells Jonesy to ignore Wayne's speech, considering its source (the unlucky-in-love manager of the mall's least popular video store, whom Jen warns Jonesy could end up like if he listens to him), and to follow his heart regarding Nikki. Taking Jen's advice, Jonesy runs over to the Khaki Barn, sweeps Nikki off her feet and kisses her in front of the sentimental Clones. After burping a moment later to The Clones' disgust, Jonesy explains to Nikki that if she can handle him being gross all the time, he can do the same with her when she has her gross moments, and the two kiss again and put the unpleasant memories of the bathroom incident to rest.

Meanwhile, Jude gets a new girlfriend in hot high school senior Melinda, who prefers to meet with Jude secretly in unusual locations (such as the mall's service corridors and near a dumpster) because she does not want word of their relationship being made public. When Jude makes a date with Melinda and he makes an excuse to try to get out of hanging out with his friends at the mall amusement park later, Caitlin figures out he's hiding something and she bugs the reluctant Jude for information, chasing him around the mall until Jude finally gives in and spills his secret while Cait has him pinned to the floor by the pay phones. Later at the arcade during the phone call from Nikki from Jonesy's place, Caitlin spills the secret to the rest of the gang, much to Jude's chagrin. The next day, Jude spots Melinda talking to a friend and, deciding he has nothing to hide now that his friends know, he calls to her, but she ignores him and walks away. Later, Melinda arranges to meet Jude, but she tells him he has to hide inside a trash can when they meet. On hearing of Jude's relationship dilemma, Jen tells him that being a "secret boyfriend" is not a good thing, explaining that the relationship is not a serious one or destined to last if Melinda is ashamed to be seen with Jude in public. Putting Jen's theory to the test, Jude has Melinda meet him in a ventilation duct above the Khaki Barn, where Jude farts twice and tells the disgusted Melinda that she has to take him the way he is if she is serious about their relationship. Melinda kicks out a grill in the duct and falls through into a stall in the Khaki Barn change room to escape, and Jude cuts his loss as he realizes, feeling no worse for wear, that Jen was right.

Happenings

  • This episode marks the third time that Caitlin has betrayed the confidence of her friends by blabbing their secrets to other people; previous such incidents occurred in Season Two's "Pillow Talk" (where she told the gang's secrets, while conveniently leaving out her own secret, to then-boyfriend Dustin, who then publicly reveals the secrets at a stage show while under hypnosis) and the earlier Season Three episode "The Journal" (when, after finding Jen's missing diary, Caitlin publicly reads its contents out loud to overhearing passers-by at the Galleria centre court, resulting in everyone at the mall knowing about Jen's secrets as the diary's contents are spread through gossip)

Allusions and References

  • During her phone call to Jen at the arcade, Nikki uses the term "Elvis has not left the building" (a variation of the iconic phrase used at Elvis Presley concerts) when talking about the state of the toilet in the upstairs bathroom at Jonesy's house when it gets plugged after she uses it
  • Jude hiding in a trash can while waiting to meet with Melinda is reminiscent of the Sesame Street character Oscar the Grouch, who lives in a garbage can himself
  • The sound effects from the video game Jude plays at the arcade were first used for the Martian death rays in the 1953 movie version of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds

Quotes

  • Jen (confronting Jonesy about him and Nikki): What are you doing?!
    Jonesy (confused): What?
Jen: You've gotta find a way to fix this!
Caitlin: Yeah Jonesy, Nikki is really embarrassed! It's up to you to show her you still feel the same way you did before the incident.
Jonesy (desperately): I don't know if I do! (the gang gasps in unison)
    Wyatt: Oh, no!
Jonesy (desperately): I think Wayne's right! I can't go back!
Jen (matter-of-factly): Since when do you take advice from "I've never been on a date with a woman" Wayne?! Just remember how much of a low-down loser you were after you lost Nikki the last time!
Wyatt: And how hard it was to get her back!
Caitlin: And that you're a better person when you're with her. (Jonesy cheers up a bit on hearing this)
Jude: And that she clogged your toilet.
Jen, Caitlin & Wyatt (in exasperation): JUDE!
    Jude: True story!
    Jonesy (hopelessly again): Oh, man!
Jen: Fine, Jonesy. Take Wayne's advice. Maybe if you're lucky, you'll end up just like him—bitter, greasy and alone for the rest of your life! (as Jonesy takes in Jen's words, a look of confidence appears on his face)
Jonesy (confidently, standing up from the table): I can fix this!! (he quickly dashes off toward the Khaki Barn and Nikki)
