Plot Overview

The Galleria becomes crowded when a snow day forces the closure of city schools and teenagers come from all over to hang out, and the situation does not sit well with Ron the Rent-a-cop, who regards all teenagers with suspicion. Meanwhile, Jen is planning the school dance (which has a "Winter Wonderland" theme), and she experiments with several hairstyles in search of one she likes for the dance. Wyatt is finally over his ex-girlfriend Serena and has forgotten about her, and now has a new romantic interest, a girl named Marlowe. Caitlin is unsure how to ask her own crush, Steph, to the dance, and Jonesy tries to find a date. While visiting with Nikki at the Khaki Barn, Jonesy first tries his luck by asking a cute blonde girl who comes in asking for dance tickets to be his date for the dance, but when the girl's hulking, brutish football-player boyfriend runs up to Jonesy, grabs him and threatens to pound him, Nikki defuses the situation and saves Jonesy from a beating by giving the girl her requested tickets.

Later, the gang goes skating at the Galleria ice rink, and Jude watches the rink's Zamboni drive by when Stanley the brat skates by and commits his most punkish act yet, assaulting Jude by viciously whacking him in the groin from behind with a hockey stick, then skating away laughing as Jude crumbles to the ice in pain. Jonesy tries to help Nikki learn how to skate, but he gets distracted by Tara Johansen, the hottest girl in school. Nikki notices this and gets angry at Jonesy, and they have a fight (mostly one-sided, in Nikki's favor) on the ice, causing them to get arrested by Ron. In the holding cell at the mall's security office, Jonesy goes crazy from claustrophobia and undresses himself down to his boxers. Nikki manages to calm him down, and a spark reignites between her and Jonesy and they nearly kiss—until Ron returns to the office and releases them from the cell. Jonesy is relieved at their release, only to be reminded by Nikki that he is still nearly naked.

Wyatt makes a few wrong moves in his relationship with Marlowe, like going through her purse and getting caught, but ultimately it is a new song that Wyatt wrote about Marlowe that gets things started. Wyatt finally works up the courage to ask Marlowe to the dance and she accepts. While Jonesy goes walking through the mall, he overhears Tara crying on her cell phone as she talks with her then-boyfriend, who tells her that he is dumping her to go to the dance with Tricia instead. Moments later, Stanley comes along with his nerf-ball gun, shoots Tara's purse out of her hands into the centre court fountain and runs away laughing again. Jonesy has enough of Stanley's antics and he chases the bratty boy down, grabs him and heads to the fountain pool to retrieve Tara's purse, dunking Stanley underwater for a moment in the process, then orders the kid to leave. Jonesy asks a grateful Tara to go to the dance with him, which makes Nikki feel jealous when she finds out. Meanwhile, Jude gets the opportunity to take the Zamboni for a ride through the mall and gets into an accident when he can't find the brakes and he ends up driving into the food court, knocking over the Big Squeeze stand and then driving into the Penalty Box. The accident results in Jen getting penalized by Coach Halder (even though she had nothing to do with it), while Ron bans Jude from the mall permanently.

Later, Caitlin tries asking Steph to go out with her to the dance by putting on a penguin suit to approach him at Grind Me. This and some previous misunderstandings between the two get Steph fed up, and he accuses the well-intentioned Caitlin of being a stalker, brings up the past incidents (none of which were her fault) and flatly tells her to leave him alone. Stung and humiliated by Steph's insensitive remarks, Caitlin feels tears well up in her eyes and she begins to cry, then turns and runs (or, because of her penguin suit, waddles) out of Grind Me. Earlier, Wyatt and Caitlin made a promise that if neither of them got a date for the dance, they would go together, and after her failed tries to get herself a date with Steph, Caitlin turns to Wyatt for backup—only to find he now has a date with Marlowe, who has formed a music group with him that will play at the dance. Now that Caitlin has no date, she decides to not go to the dance at all, thinking she would be laughed at for going without a date. But soon, she learns that The Clones from the Khaki Barn, as well as some Greeter Gods from Albatross & Finch, are going stag, and she changes her mind and decides to go after all.

Nikki agrees to stay at the Khaki Barn and miss the dance, if The Clones help her fix Jen's dress after she got soaked with a thrown water balloon by Robbie, Jonesy's troublemaking youngest brother; with Caitlin coordinating the fix-up mission, Chrissy, Kirsten and Kristen get to work drying Jen's dress with hair dryers while Cait fixes Jen's hair and redoes her makeup, and the girls celebrate a job well done afterward. When Jen and company return to meet Jen's date, Wyatt reports that Robbie has paid the price for his delinquent behavior earlier by getting thrown in the mall security lockup. Jude then drives by on the Zamboni and reveals to the gang that he has been hired to replace the retiring Zamboni driver, Bruno, as the new Zamboni driver at the ice rink (thereby overruling Ron's ban of Jude from the mall), and he offers to give everyone a ride on the Zamboni to the dance. Later, while Nikki is at the store alone, Darth drops in and tells her that his girlfriend, Wonder Taco Julie, had dumped him. Nikki tells Darth that he should go to Julie and tell her how he feels about her, so Darth decides to go to the dance and ask his ex-girlfriend for a second chance, and Darth returns the favor by encouraging Nikki to find Jonesy and do the same.

Meanwhile at the dance in the school gym, Jonesy is hanging out with Tara and a friend of hers when Tara and the friend start poking fun at Julie, who is tending the catering table. Jonesy goes to talk to Julie, who explains that she misses Darth, when Tara appears beside Jonesy and berates him for talking to the nerdy girl. Jonesy soon discovers that Tara is only using him to show up her ex-boyfriend and, after Tara and her friend laugh at the newly-reunited Darth and Julie, Jonesy learns how shallow she really is, then he tells her so and he dumps her (in front of her ex and his date Tricia, who both laugh at her misfortune). Jonesy, acting on a tip from Darth, then decides to head to The Galleria to look for Nikki, and as he leaves, he gets a purple/white corsage from Jen, who tells him that the purple in the corsage is Nikki's favorite color. After arriving back at the mall and searching everywhere, Jonesy finally finds Nikki, who is crying in the upper level of the stands at the ice rink. Jonesy asks Nikki why she dumped him in the first place, and she tells him she was afraid of messing up what they had or would have had. After this, Jonesy and Nikki finally admit their true feelings for each other, then Jonesy asks Nikki to go to the dance with him, she accepts and they kiss.

Jonesy and Nikki then return to the gym to the delight of the rest of the gang, and the night ends on a winning note for the gang as Wyatt, Marlowe and their band hit the stage to perform a song which Nikki and Jonesy slow-dance to with the rest of the couples on the gym floor, while a delighted Caitlin is called over to dance by Scott, the head A&F Greeter God.

Happenings

Characters

  • Tricia appears briefly in a non-speaking role in this episode
  • The female manager at Si Si Sombrero's, a Mexican restaurant at the mall where Jonesy very briefly works, sounds and looks to be only 12 years old (as depicted in the English-language broadcast version of this episode), technically making her too young to hold a job with that level of responsibility in real life. In the DVD version of the episode, she is replaced by an older male character
  • Nikki, long known for her sarcastic tough-girl personality in the series, finally lets down her guard in this episode and reveals her vulnerable side when she confesses her feelings to Jonesy after he finds her crying at the ice rink

Trivia

The Show

  • The lyrics to Wyatt's song, which Nikki and Jonesy slow-dance to:

I know I’m not the coolest guy
But there’s a burning desire inside
Girl, I never wanted anyone more
In a perfect world we’d be together
Endless nights make me feel like never
There’s something that I’ve got to say...

You’re the reason
I wake every day
The reason
I wish I could say
You’re my everything
And girl, I need you now

You’re the reason
I lie awake every night
The reason
I need you in my life
You’re my everything
And girl I need you now

You’re my everything
And girl I need you now...

Behind the Scenes

  • Breanne Wolkowski of Oxbow, Saskatchewan, won the Catch Your Big Break on Teletoon contest held by the network, and was cast as the voice of the manager at Jonesy's new job at Si Si Sombrero's (noted above in the Characters subsection)

Allusions and References

  • The football jock who threatens Jonesy with a beating for asking out his girlfriend to the dance is patterned after Archie Comics character "Big" Moose Mason, both in appearance and personality (especially due to the jealous streak he harbors toward any guy who directs attention to his girlfriend and to the physical threats he makes toward her would-be suitors). In the Season Four episode "Out of this World", the football jock's name is revealed as "Little Cody" (which is a play on the Big Moose moniker)
  • During the fight between Nikki and Jonesy at the ice rink, Nikki gets her shirt pulled up over her head by Jonesy, which is a common tactic used by hockey players in fights during hockey games
  • Prior to becoming Jonesy's rebound fling, Tara Johansen first appears in the series as an unnamed hanger-on/friend of teen celebrity Liza Loman in Loman's entourage attending the opening night of the Soft Rock Café in "Over Exposed"

Memorable Moments

  • Jonesy and Nikki's reunion in the ice rink stands

Quotes

  • Jonesy (confidently, to Nikki as he slides up to the sales counter at the Khaki Barn): Guess what? I just got fired, so you get to hang out with me.
Nikki (sarcastically): Oh, joy! Look, I'm really busy, Jonesy.
Jonesy: Don't worry, I'll help you.
Blonde girl (coming up to sales counter): Two tickets, please.
Jonesy (to the girl, getting a little too confident): How about we go to the dance together, sweet lips? (right then, the girl's football jock boyfriend runs up and grabs Jonesy)
Football jock (shouting at Jonesy): HOW 'BOUT I POUND YOU INTO THE GROUND?!!
Jonesy (losing his nerve): No, no, that's okay...Nikki, give the girl her tickets.
Nikki (apologetically): Sorry 'bout that, he never learns. (hands the girl her tickets, and the hulking jock, still menacing Jonesy and growling at him, then drops him as he and his girlfriend walk out)
Nikki (sarcastically, to Jonesy): Smooth Jonesy, real smooth.
  • Wyatt (as Nikki and Jonesy fight at the ice rink): Should we wait until this plays out?
    Caitlin: Nah.
Jude: Five bucks says Nikki takes him out?
    Jen: I'll take that action.
  • Jonesy (finding Nikki in the upper level bleachers at the ice rink): I've been looking everywhere for you... (sees Nikki in tears as he gets closer) ...you're crying.
Nikki (sniffing as she wipes away a tear): I am not! I just have...something really big in my eyes, okay?! (gets up to leave)
Jonesy: Wait! Why did you break up with me? (Nikki stops halfway down the bleachers)
Nikki (tearful yet indignant): Oh, what, like it's inconceivable that a girl can resist Jonesy's many charms?!
Jonesy (joining Nikki in the stands): I'm serious! I want to know.
Nikki (near-sobbing): "Maybe I was scared, ok? Maybe I was afraid we'd screw everything up, and I'd lose the one guy who means more to me than anyone else in the whole world.
    Jonesy (speechless): Oh...wow.
Nikki (angrily, as she sniffs again): Is that all you have to say?! What are you even doing here? I thought you were supposed to be at the dance with the prettiest girl in school!
Jonesy: Well, maybe I'm with the prettiest girl in school right now! (Nikki gasps)
Nikki (angrily): So then, why didn't you ask me?
Jonesy: Maybe I was scared to!
    Nikki: Jonesy...!
Jonesy (interrupting): Just shut up for a second and let me say something! (pauses a moment to calm down) I was at the dance with this really hot girl and things should have been great. But all I could think about was you. Annoying, sarcastic, totally frustrating you! (Nikki is left speechless)
Jonesy (continuing): Nikki, you're the only girl I want to go out with. So I'm asking you... (he takes out the corsage Jen gave him, and Nikki gasps) ...will you go to the dance with me? (a tearful, touched and appreciative Nikki takes the corsage and puts it on her right wrist, then answers Jonesy)
Nikki (choking back tears): Yes! (Jonesy then comes close to her, caresses her cheek, brings her closer and kisses her, which soon becomes a full embrace as they both wrap arms around each other)
  • Jonesy (as he and Nikki dance to Wyatt's song): Y'know, you could've made this a lot easier and just asked me!
Nikki (laughing): And miss all that drama? Never!
