Plot Overview

A man in a devil's costume is killed in an apparent hit-and-run accident in New York City. The man's brother, art dealer Vincent Marion, hires Stuart Bailey, now an independent private eye, to come to New York City, not to investigate his brother's death, but to use $9,000 that the dead man left behind, to buy his brother's way into heaven...find the people he'd wronged and pay them. This leads Stu to a gang of bizarre, disparate characters, ranging from a priest to a Gypsy to a beautiful blonde who's dogging his every move. Also watching him closely is a New York City detective with a particular hatred for private detectives.

Notes

Welcome to 77 Sunset Strip, version 2.O...new Executive Producer Jack Webb has instituted a whole host of changes, not the least of which is the jettisoning of all the other characters from the previous seasons. Stu Bailey is now an independent private eye working out of the ornate Bradbury Building, which is as far from the fabled strip as you can get. The familiar finger-snapping theme song is also gone, replaced by a more noirish sounding theme. Additionally, Bailey now narrates the episode, giving the stories a bit of a Raymond Chandler feel. The opening credits have also changed, with Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. riding an elevator in his fancy new building.

This episode begins with George Fenneman introducing the all-star cast, announcing the role, followed by the actor saying their name. The episode ends with an announcement of which celebrities will be appearing in the next installment.
