Basic Information
Mary Camden is the eldest daughter of Eric and Annie Camden. When she was younger, she was a tomboy and held a respected position among the family. As the seasons passed, Mary turned out to be more of a black sheep as she struggled to find her way in life.
Character History
Mary went through the biggest change of any of the characters on the show and it's eleven year run. In Seasons 1 and 2, she was the golden child of the family, the favorite of the bunch. She had good grades, was on the varsity basketball team at an early age, and was an overall good sister and daughter. At the start of Season 3, Mary began to change. She cut her hair, and started getting into more (youthful) trouble. She started to make her transition from being a tomboy to caring a bit more about her appearance and what others thought of her. Season 4 was the beginning of Mary's complete demise. She, with a few other of her basketball teammates, trashed the school gym because their coach had locked them out. She and her friends were arrested, and thankfully was able to go into a diversion program that kept her out of jail and doing volunteer work. After that, she began to get down on herself and began to be portrayed as stupid. She decided she didn't want to go to college and started working low-paying jobs like being a waitress at The Pool Hall. She went into major debt and fell in with a bad group of friends; her behavior took over the family. Eric and Annie decided that it would be best if she moved out of GlenOak and into her grandparent's house in Buffalo, NY. There she met up with her old boyfriend from high school, Wilson West. Things grew serious, and they wished to marry. However, after a failed attempt at eloping, Mary came back home to GlenOak. She stayed for a few months and started attending the local university. After that, she decided she wanted to move back to Buffalo primarily to get a new job as a flight attendant.
Mary ends up marrying Carlos Rivera. Mary met him during the Christmas episode of Season 3 at a homeless shelter Eric made her volunteer at. They met back up gain during what would have been Season 7, and got married without the family knowing a week after her sister Lucy and her husband Kevin Kinkirk. They had one son, Charlie, and then Mary and Carlos started having problems. On the first season finale, Carlos announced that Mary was pregnant with twins. She had two twin boys.
Memorable Moments
One of, if not the most, telling Mary Camden moment came in the pilot, which when Mary cons her older brother Matt into helping her with her basketball game. She really wanted to ask him about kissing and how that should be done. This scene incorporates three things typical of Mary: a "wacky plan", boys, and basketball.
