ABC Films was an American television distribution company. It is a predecessor of what is now CBS Media Ventures.
History
ABC Films was established in July 1953 as ABC Film Syndication, the original distribution arm of ABC. It was set up by ABC to syndicate programs produced by the network, as well as licencing programs from independent producers, for off-network airing in domestic and international markets.
When the Federal Communications Commission ruled in 1970 that the American broadcast networks could no longer distribute their own programs for off-network syndication or produce first-run syndicated programs due to concerns about the networks monopolizing the broadcast landscape, the networks had to sell or spin off their distribution units. Five former ABC Films executives acquired the assets of that company from ABC on March 30, 1973, at which point ABC Films was reorganized as Worldvision Enterprises.
The majority of the ABC Films catalogue is now under the ownership of CBS Media Ventures.
