A for Andromeda is a science fiction drama. An extraterrestrial radio signal is received, containing specifications for a supercomputer. Once built, the machine evolves into a messenger that studies human society and biology and produces an artificially grown young woman that is a clone of a killed lab tech.

Except for one complete episode (the sixth episode, "The Face of the Tiger", a 16mm film copy of which was donated by a private collector to the BBC archives), an audio recording of the seventh and final episode ("The Last Mystery") and a few surviving film fragments from the first, second, third and seventh episodes, all recordings of the series have been lost due to the BBC's pre-1978 practice of destroying its copies of the programs it produced. It was followed by The Andromeda Breakthrough and was later remade in 2006. An Italian version of the series, A come Andromeda, was aired on Italian state broadcaster RAI in 1972.
