Against the Wind, a 13-episode miniseries, tells the story of Mary Mulvane (later Garrett), a young 18-year old Irish woman who, after being convicted of theft, is transported to Australia to serve seven years as punishment. She had been attempting to steal back her family's dairy cow, which had been taken after her family couldn't pay their tithes to the local parish. Her life changes dramatically as she suffers an arduous ship journey and becomes a servant to colonial settlers in her new homeland. She dreams of returning home to Ireland, but events conspire to change the course of her life, in the years following her arrival.
