Plot Overview

Buffy is in L.A. and confronts Angel over his silent visit to Sunnydale. Soon, the two are attacked by a demon and Angel becomes exposed to its blood, which makes him mortal. No longer distanced by Angel’s curse, the two make the most of their time together. However, the forces of darkness still march and Angel finds that he is in no shape to aide Buffy when it comes. He is given only a single heartbreaking opportunity to protect Buffy.

Notes

Monster of the Week

  • Mohra Demon: The green demon that attacks Angel is a Mohra demon, which is commonly known as an assassin for darkness. The book that Angel finds him in explain that his "veins run with the blood of eternity," meaning that its blood has regenerative properties that affect anyone who comes into contact with it, including the demon itself. Mohra Demons require massive amounts of salt to survive and can only be killed when someone "brings darkness to a thousand eyes" (or, rather, smash the jewel in his forehead).

Body Count

# Whom By Whom How Where
1 Mohra Demon #1 Angel Impaled Sewer
2 Mohra Demon #2 Buffy Destroyed Its Gem Saline Factory
3 Mohra Demon #1 (Again) Angel Destroyed Its Gem Angel's Office

Arc Advancement

Happenings

  • Crossover: This episode continues from "Pangs".
  • The Powers That Be: Angel finally speaks to the Powers That Be, at least in an indirect way through oracles.
  • Foreshadowing: The Mohra demon warns Buffy and Angel that "a great darkness" and "the end of days" is coming. The Oracles also briefly hint at the possibility of Angel being turned human if he prevented the apocalypse.

Characters

  • Angel: After killing the Mohra demon, his blood mixes with the demon's and the result turns him mortal. Because he is just a man, he is released from his duties as a warrior for the Powers That Be. However, when he learns of the impending apocalypse, he asks the Oracles to turn him back into a demon. Time is reversed and Angel remains undead.
  • Buffy and Angel: Buffy and Angel rekindle their relationship briefly while Angel is mortal and can't lose his soul due to perfect happiness. But, because of the time reversal, she doesn't remember any of the events that occurred.

Referbacks

  • BtVS - 3x20 - The Prom: Buffy and Angel previously had a conversation about their relationship in a sewer when Angel told her that he was leaving town and couldn't maintain their relationship.
Buffy: Oh, boy. I was really jonesing for another heartbreaking sewer talk.

Trivia

The Show

  • Crossover: This is the first episode in which Sarah Michelle Gellar appears as Buffy in the series. The episode takes place after the events of a episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer called "Pangs", in which Angel attempts to save Buffy from some kind of life threatening evil. Although he bumps into Willow, Xander, and Giles, he successfully avoids running into Buffy. When everything looks like it'll work out for the best, Xander accidentally blurts out that Angel was there.
  • Fan Favorite: In an issue of the Angel magazine, this episode was ranked #1 in a poll of the top 25 Angel episodes.
  • Music Cue: The song "Close Your Eyes," otherwise known as the Buffy/Angel theme, is heard briefly in the seconds before the time turns back entirely.
  • It's All Greek to Me: The inscription over the portal that leads to the Oracles reads "Πυλη δια Χαμενες Ψυχες".

Behind the Scenes

  • Ratings: On its first airing, this episode scored a 5.9/9 in the overnight Nielsen ratings. It was ranked 2nd out of the 15 WB shows which aired that week.

Allusions and References

  • Titanic: Titanic is a highly grossing 1997 film about the doomed ocean liner which hit an iceberg and sank, killing many of the passengers on board. The movie starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, and was over three hours long. Although Cordelia mentions the director's cut of the movie, James Cameron has said that there is no such thing and the version released in theaters is the official director's cut.
Cordelia: We still have time for a cappuccino and probably the director's cut of Titanic.
  • Orson Welles: Orson Welles was an immensely popular and influential writer and director, who created such films as Citizen Kane and No Exit. Welles has often been parodied in pop culture due to his obesity during the later stages of his life. Doyle is likely referring to this, considering that Angel is stuffing his face right before he says the line.
Doyle: Orson! We're in a situation here.

Memorable Moments

Quotes

  • Cordelia: Batten down the hatches. Here comes hurricane Buffy.
Doyle: You think?
(Cordelia scoffs)
Doyle: Maybe he's over her.
Cordelia: You have so much to learn, little Irish man.
  • Angel: No need to stir any of this up again.
Cordelia: You don't want to stir, but if my ex came to town and was all stalking me in the shadows and then left and then he didn't even say hello, I'd be --
Buffy: A little upset. Wouldn't you?
  • Angel: It's complicated how this all happened, Buffy, you know. It's kind of a long story.
Buffy: Your new sidekick had a vision, I was in it, you came to Sunnydale?
Angel: Okay, maybe not that long.
  • Doyle: So, that's the Slayer.
Cordelia: That's our little Buffy.
Doyle: Well, she seemed a little...
Cordelia: Bulgarian in that outfit?
Doyle: Nah, I was gonna say "hurt".
Cordelia: Yeah, there's a lot of that when they're together.
  • Doyle: Did you hear that?
Cordelia: Oh, yeah. The Buffy and Angel Show. First they talk out their differences, then they punch them out.
Doyle: Shouldn't we...?
Cordelia: Stick our noses where they don't belong and get them flattened? No thank you.
  • Buffy: Friend of yours?
Angel: Never saw it before.
Buffy: It was rude. We should go kill it.
Angel: I'm free.
  • Buffy: Angel? You okay?
Angel: I feel weird.
Buffy: I know. I do, too. I mean, I only came to see you so I could tell you face-to-face not to... see me face-to-face anymore. And I know there's a fly in that logic ointment somewhere, but the next thing I knew, we were being attacked by this Mutant Ninja Demon Thing, and - and then we're on the floor on top of each other, and... it's just really confusing being around you.
Angel: No, I meant I felt weird from the demon's blood. It's powerful.
Buffy: O-kay. Let's just rewind Buffy's little outburst and pretend it never happened.
  • Cordelia: Oh, my God.
Doyle: What?
Cordelia: (picks up dust) She killed him! Oops. My bad. It's just dust. I forgot to clean under the rug.
Doyle: What are you trying to give me a heart attack?
Cordelia: Hey, don't blame me if he's too cheap to hire a cleaning lady.
  • Angel: (after turning human) Oh, my God. Food. This is unbelievable. This is so... Mmm! You know, I forgot how good it all tastes when you're alive.
Cordelia: Yeah, they didn't even have cookie-dough-fudge-mint-chip in your day.
Angel: Oh! I want some. Can you get that?
Cordelia: It'll go straight to your thighs.
  • Angel: "The gateway for lost souls"... is under the post office?
Doyle: It makes sense, you think about it.
  • Cordelia: (about Buffy and Angel) Oh, please. They've got the forbidden love of all time. They've been apart for months. Now he's suddenly human, I'm sure they're down there just having tea and crackers.
  • Buffy: You know, it's a good thing I didn't fantasise about you turning human only about ten zillion times... because today would have been a real let-down.
  • Doyle: I'll finally be free to go out and make me own mark in the world.
Cordelia: We had a cat that used to do that. Oh, God! What am I gonna do? I'm good for exactly two things: international superstardom, or helping a vampire with a soul to rid the world of evil. That makes for a short but... colourful resume.
  • Mohra Demon: The End of Days has begun and cannot be stopped. For any one of us that falls, ten shall rise.
Buffy: You hurt my boyfriend!
Mohra Demon: A great darkness is coming.
Buffy: You got that right!
