Plot Overview
While lost in the woods, Aang and his friends stumble into a Fire Nation camp. They're rescued by a band of guerillas, led by a young but skilled warrior named Jet. He wastes no time defeating the soldiers, sweeping Katara off her feet, and inviting the gang to stay in his treetop hideout. He explains his intent to drive the Fire Nation out of a nearby village, and asks that Katara and Aang help out, although Sokka doesn't quite trust him.
The next day, Jet takes Sokka along on a special mission- intercepting a visitor to the forest. Sokka is appalled at Jet's apparent mugging of a harmless old man, but Jet claims that the man was an assassin sent to eliminate him, and Katara takes his side. Later that night, Sokka overhears Jet plotting with his men- they will clear the village of Fire Nation by blowing open a reservoir with captured explosives, sending a flood to kill Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom alike. Sokka is found before he can act on this, however.
What Jet needed Katara and Aang's help for, it turns out, is filling the reservoir by bending open underground springs, under the pretense of anticipating fire-based attacks. After they finish, they discover Jet's extremist tactics for themselves, and Jet attacks Aang to stop him traveling to the village and interfering. With Katara's help, Aang wins the fight, but the dam is destroyed after all. Fortunately, Sokka had escaped from his guards and warned the people in time to evacuate the village. Jet is left frozen to a tree while the gang flies off to continue their journey.
Notes
- Katara's reaction to being asked to bend water she can't see adds another wrinkle to the concept of bending.
- Jet is one of the first non-bender characters to give Aang a serious challenge in a fight, showing that bending does not render one invincible or unstoppable at all, and can be trumped by conventional weapons and fighting styles given sufficient skill.
