Refraction is the fifth episode of the fourth season of Bates Motel, and the thirty-fifth episode overall.

Plot Overview

Norman begins to cooperate in therapy, allowing Dr Edwards to see another side of him. Dylan prepares for a new life with Emma by applying for a new job. Looking to have a window fixed following the break-in, Norma meets Chick, unaware of his connection to her family.

Happenings

• The police call back to Edwards over Norman's claims and reveals that Norma has no record, Bradley Martin was a suicide, and there's someone already in jail of the murder of Blaire Watson. They haven't been able to locate Audrey (Decody) Ellis.

• Romero warns Rebecca that the DEA is sniffing around her.

Characters

• Emma returns home.

• Chick meets Norma to fix her window in order to find out about Caleb. He soon learns Caleb is her brother and quickly figures out the situation with Dylan.

• Emma tells Dylan that the doctors state she can't have sex for four to six weeks.

• Dylan goes to a job interview in Seattle.

• Norman believes Norma visited him. When Edwards confronts him about this, Norman is triggered into switching over to Mother, with Edwards fully of who he's talking to.

• Norma discovers Romero killed Bob Paris.

Allusions and References

• When Dylan shows his scars to Emma is similar in Jaws when the characters of Quint and Hooper compare scares, which is addressed when Dylan begins quoting the film.
  • The film was directed Steven Spielberg who Olivia Cooke would work with less than two years later on Ready Player One.

• Norma: Well, did they have to break my favourite window? That's mean. That's personal. What the hell, Alex? I have been so good. I've totally kept to myself. All I've been thinking about is Norman and getting him better. I've been busy marrying you. I haven't had time to piss anyone off.

Norma: Yeah, well, my brother hasn't always been the most reliable.

Chick: Huh. That was your - your brother? That explains a lot.

• Norman: If you want to know what's really wrong with Norman, you should talk to the person who knows him best.

Dr Edwards: And that's you?

Norman: Of course it is. I'm his mother.
