Basic Information
Captain Aaron Kelly, Galactica's apparent third-in-command, was an officer aboard the battlestar prior to and following the Cylon attack on the Colonies. He was Galactica's LSO (Landing Signal Officer). The Landing Signal Officer is responsible for the visual control of aircraft in the final phase of the approach prior to landing. On a modern aircraft carrier, the LSO directs planes to land, break off the attempt, etc. He is seen performing his duties as LSO in the episode Final Cut, where he is seen in the flight pod directing pilot Louanne "Kat" Katraine's landing. This at least partially explains why he disappeared for the entire first season of the show: his primary duties are in the flight pod, not in CIC.
Character History
Captain Kelly appeared in the miniseries helping out in CIC, then did not appear again for the entire first season. This was presumably because his assignment is in the flight pod directing ship landings, not in CIC.
When Commander Adama was shot by Boomer and Colonel Tigh took command, Kelly returned to CIC duty as Tigh's temporary executive officer. He voiced objections over Gaeta's plan to network the Galactica's computer systems after Galactica's separation from the fleet in Scattered, complaining that Adama would not approve. He also expressed doubt as to whether or not Gaeta would be able to out-think the Cylons at computer programming.
Memorable Moments
Trivia
- Captain Kelly was featured in the miniseries, but then disappeared for the entire run of the first season. He reappeared on the CIC after Commander Adama was shot and was brought up the chain of command as Col. Tigh's second in command.
- Kelly's first name, while unspoken on-screen to date, was given in the credits of the episode Final Cut.
