History

The scrolls tell the thirteenth tribe left Kobol in the early days. They travelled far and made their home upon a planet called Earth, which circled a distant and unknown star.

Quotes

  • Life here began out there.

Book of Pythia

History

Some 3,600 years prior to the Cylon attack, Pythia - an oracle - wrote about the exile and eventual rebirth of the human race.

Content

The Scroll of Pythia is the most frequently referenced holy scroll. It is said to contain a number of prophecies concerning the exodus of mankind from Kobol, and even prophesies the exodus of mankind from the Twelve Colonies to find the fabled 13th colony called Earth.

It also contains information regarding the location of the "Tomb of Athena", which is said (and has been shown) to contain a map or some sort of indicator to Earth's location. It says that one must use the Arrow of Apollo (an artifact located in the Delphi Museum on Caprica) to enter the tomb, as well as giving numerous geographical directions of its location on Kobol via description and maps.

Quotes

  • And the Lord anointed a leader to guide the caravan of the heavens to their new homeland and unto the leader they gave a vision of serpents, numbering two and ten, as a sign of things to come.
  • Though the outcome favored the few, it led to a confrontation at the home of the Gods.
  • The leader suffered a wasted disease and would not live to enter the new land.
  • All of this has happened before. All of this will happen again.

References

In Greek mythology, Pythia was known as The Delphic Sibyl (prophetess). She was the Priestess of Python, an ancient chthonic serpent. From then on, "Pythia" became a generic title given to whichever priestess manned the oracle at the time. Pausanias, a Greek geographer, claimed that Pythia was "born between man and goddess, daughter of sea monsters and an immortal nymph." Others claimed she was the sister or daughter of Apollo, and others still claimed she received her powers from Gaia.

One of the more notable stories about Pythia involves the legendary Hercules, who visited the Sibyl after being tricked by Hera into murdering his wife and children. As penance, Pythia instructed Hercules to carry out twelve tasks as set by Eurystheus, his arch-nemesis.
