Bleach — Season Three

Authentic Records! School of Shinigami is the fifth episode of the third season of Bleach and the forty-sixth episode overall. Momo reflects on her first occasion fighting with Renji and Izuru, as well as the first time she met Captain Aizen.

Plot Overview

Set in the distant past, Momo, Izuru, and Renji have been entered into the Soul Reaper academy and have all been placed in "Freshman Class 1," a so-called advanced class only for those who scored highly on the exam. Rukia, however, is stuck in the second, less advanced class. She curses Renji for getting into the higher class, but he isn't fairing as well as she might think. During practice on a particular projectile spell, Renji blows himself up trying to out-do Izuru, who managed to hit the target directly. Renji gets his revenge later when he bests Izuru in a sparring match. Afterwards, though, they wind up becoming friends despite the earlier animosity, but the moment is broken when they follow a group of students to the courtyard where a captain is coming by to inspect the academy. The captain is question is the recently deceased Sōsuke Aizen, with his former lieutenant Gin Ichimaru. Momo is immediately smitten by him and can't stop talking about him when she goes back home to spend time with her friend Toshiro.

After the surprise visit, Renji's class is brought into the living world to fight dummy hollows, something which Rukia considers completely unfair. Before crossing over, they meet their guides, which includes Shūhei Hisagi, a student who has already been assigned to a squad, even before graduation. Renji, Izuru and Momo break into one of the groups and quickly make short work of their dummy. But, before long, a real hollow attacks the supposed safe zone. It killed the barrier team before making its way to the gathered students and killing Kanisawa as well. Aoga is also killed by the hollow and the other freshmen are told to run away, leaving Shūhei to fight on his own. Momo, however, refuses to run. She and her other group members return to the battle in time to save their last surviving guide and attack the hollow with a super-charged version of the projectile attack from before. The diversion gives them an opportunity to run, but they eventually find themselves surrounded by several more hollows of the same class. But, Captain Aizen and Ichimaru appear in time to effortlessly slay all of the hollows.

Back in the present day, Momo uses her powers to incapacitate her guard and, presumably, moves to break free from her cell.
