Gin Ichimaru's Shadow is the twentieth episode of the first season of Bleach. Ichigo, Chad, Orihime and Uryu complete their training and begin their journey into the soul society.

Plot Overview
Right after passing sentence on Rukia, Byakuya is confronted by two other captains, Gin Ichimaru and Kenpachi Zaraki, who are concerned that he may have trouble sentencing a family member to death. He responds coldly and insults Kenpachi's lineage, which leads to an off-screen fight and the binding of Kenpachi on a rooftop.
Meanwhile in Urahara's underground training facility, Ichigo's third test is underway: To knock off Urahara's hat with his zanpakuto. He initially believes that he'll be able to easily finish the task since Urahara is using a sword-cane that couldn't possibly hurt him. Of course, he's wrong and the sword really is a zanpakuto. When Urahara awakens his sword with its name, Ichigo flashes back to Renji's awakening and understands that he needs to do the same to survive. Urahara cuts what remains of his sword into pieces and Ichigo runs away until he is confronted by Zangetsu once again. Zangetsu tells him that he can finally hear him as long as he faces forward and lets go of his fear. Ichigo, after dispelling his fear entirely, awakens his sword with its name and knocks off Urahara's hat with a single swing of his oddly shaped, hiltless sword.
While Ichigo completes his third task, Uryu is putting the finishing touches on a special brace to empower his bow and Chad blow a hole in a building. But, because of this overshoot, the three have to abandon the building before the construction workers outside investigate. With everyone's training complete, they're told to relax until the gate is opened. To do so, they go to a summer fireworks festival. They all enjoy the fireworks until Ichigo leaves at 1AM for the Urahara shop after being given a talisman by his father. Ichigo meets Chad, Uryu, Orihime and Yoruichi at the gate. Although he's surprised by the appearance of his friends, he's even more shocked by the talking cat.
They're all brought into the subterranean training sublevel of the shop and led to the gate which will transform them all into soul form and allowed entry into the soul society. The gate, however, can only be opened for 4 minutes, not nearly enough time under normal circumstances. But, even so, the four follow Yoruichi into the gate and hope that they make it before it closes down.
