The Awakening Lion is the ninth episode of the third season of Bleach and the fiftieth episode overall. The ongoing story takes a break when Don Kanonji arrives at the Kurosaki home to recruit a team of kids to boost his television ratings.

Plot Overview
Back in the world of the living, Kon has been stitched to a couple of other puppets and isn't entirely happy about his predicament. While he mopes in Yuzu's room, Don Kanonji has returned to the Kurosaki hospital to invite Karin for special training so that they can safe the city together. Karin immediately sees through Kanonji's ruse and he admits that his ratings are low and he needs to reform the Karakura Heroes to regain an audience. Karin rebukes his offer, but he finds another sucker in Kon, who falls out a window and could be a mascot for his show. He agrees to be part of Kanonji's plan in hopes of escaping Yuzu, but she winds up tagging along as well under the assumption that "King Karakura" isn't actually her doll.
They wind up outside of the Urahara shop, where they recruit Jinta and Ururu for their training. Their training mostly consists of abusing Kon until he gives up and runs away. While he makes his way back to the hospital, Kon is captured by a hollow, who apparently has inappropriate designs in mind for him. The Karakura Heroes and Don Kanonji arrive to save Kon, but it just gets Yuzu in more danger because she can't see it. A fight ensues, Yuzu is saved from the hollow by Karin and the hollow reacts by spinning everyone into a tornado. After more bickering between Jinta and Karin, they all finally stop the hollow and everything goes back to normal, including Kon going back with Yuzu and Kanonji getting back on top of his ratings thanks to the covertly filmed escapade.
