A decomposed body is found in a lake in Washington. It is identified as belonging to a girl who had interned for a Senator before her disappearance three years before. Brennan and Booth discover that she had been sexually involved with the Senator, and that she had allegedly had a "stalker".
However it turns out that the Senator's aide, ostensibly her boyfriend, murdered her when she became pregnant: not because of jealousy, but because he feared that his job would be lost along with that of the Senator when the story emerged.
He then planted evidence which pointed at both the "stalker" and the victim's father. However Brennan tracks him down just as he is about to destroy vital evidence and shoots him in the leg to stop him.
