Plot Overview

A creature appears to be targeting members of the swim team, with two already found by nothing more than their skin. Buffy keeps a watchful eye on the most likely next target, while the others try to find out about the origin of the monster.

Notes

Monster of the Week

The obvious influence on the monster in this episode is the Gill-man from The Creature from the Black Lagoon, the final Universal movie monster to be reimagined in this season. In the films, the creature is posited to be the last surviving member of a race of amphibious monsters that were prolific in the Devonian age. The creatures primarily lived in an unexplored lagoon deep in the Amazon rainforest.

Members of the swim team were exposed to a steroid mix which was added to the water supply in the steam room. The coach invented the mixture using fish DNA and reports of similar experiments made by the Soviet Union. The mix transformed four of the boys into amphibious monsters, who all escape to live in the sea.

Trivia

The Show

Behind the Scenes

  • Wentworth Miller's first on screen credit.
  • International: Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been dubbed into many different languages and the title translated for each different international version. Some international translations of this episode's title are:
    • French: "Les hommes-poissons" ("The Fish-Men")
    • Italian: "Il DNA dei campioni" ("The DNA of Champions")
    • German: "Das Geheimnis der Fischmonster" ("The Secret of the Fish Monsters")
    • Japanese: "魚の逆襲" ("Sakana no Gyakushū" - "The Fish Strike Back")

Allusions and References

  • Jaws: Xander quotes a line from the movie Jaws in regard to the flayed skin being found on the beach. The line was said by Richard Dreyfuss, who played the role of marine biologist Matt Hooper, although Xander's impression sounded more like Roy Scheider, who appeared in the film as Sheriff Brody.
Xander: In other words, this was no boating accident.
  • The Blue Lagoon: Cordelia mistakenly references The Blue Lagoon, a romance drama about two children who survive a shipwreck in the South Pacific, only to seek refuge on a desert island where they fall in love. The film, as Xander says, starred a 14-year old Brooke Shields alongside Christopher Atkins.
Xander: The creature from the blue lagoon was Brooke Shields.

Memorable Moments

Quotes

  • Buffy: I'm a swim groupie.
Gage: Uh-huh.
Buffy: Oh yeah. You know, there's just something about the smell of chlorine on a guy. Oh, baby.
