Buffy the Vampire Slayer — Season Five

I Was Made to Love You is the fifteenth episode of the fifth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the ninety-third episode overall, and continues the love-lorn theme that seems prevalent in the season. A mysterious girl wanders around looking for a mysterious man named Warren while Buffy attempts to make herself more appealing to a saner version of the opposite sex.

Plot Overview

Buffy is still reeling with disgust over Spike's profession of love, further putting him on the out, as Joyce tries to get back into the dating pool.

While Buffy considers beginning a relationship with Ben, a lovesick robot shows up in town, looking for her boyfriend. What she doesn't know is that her builder has moved on.

• April: It's another robot in Sunnydale! April was built by a boy named Warren who was sick of being alone. She's built to love him and the things he's interested in, but when he got bored of her because she was so predictable. He fell in love with a girl named Katrina and left April in his dorm. He hoped that her batteries would run out and he could be happy with his new girlfriend.

• Glory: We learn in this episode that the transformation works from Glory to Ben as well. Glory also discovers that Ben was attempting to proposition Buffy for a date.

• Joyce and Robots: The last time a robot was seen in the series was in the second season when Joyce was dating Ted, a robot who attempted to marry her. In this episode, the moment that Joyce started dating again was the same day that another robot appears.

• Music At The Bronze: The song that plays at the Bronze is the main theme song to Psycho Beach Party, a movie starring Nicholas Brendon.

Behind the Scenes

• Contrary to rumour, Britney Spears was not originally cast in the episode. When Joss Whedon heard that Britney Spears wanted to be on the show, this episode was written in preparation for the possibility. Having not seen Spears act, the robot story was done so as to cover up in case she wasn't a good actress. Whedon stated that there was never anything official about a guest appearance and that after hearing so many other celebrities wanting to be on the series, he stopped believing them after awhile.

Allusions and References

• Martin Luther: Martin Luther was a monk who became fed up with church corruption in the 16th century. He nailed his grievances against the church to the door of a German church, of which eventually spawned an offshoot of Catholicism known as Lutheranism. Lutherans believe in less sacraments and felt that salvation depended on faith and not good works. This sect broke the Roman Catholic hold over Europe and led to the creation of other protestant offshoots.

Anya: I had trouble adjusting to the idea of Lutherans.

• April getting angry at Spike's proposition and throwing him through a window.

• Giles threatening Spike when he comes to the magic shop in order to try to backpedal to her friends.

• Buffy finding Joyce dead, sprawled out on the couch.

• Buffy: Oh, no. Love Doctor Buffy is not in. I am not qualified to give dating advice. I've had exactly two boyfriends, and they both left. Really left. Left town left.

• Tara: Willow's good at all that computer stuff, but me not so much. Do you really understand all that?

Anya: Oh. Well, at first it was confusing. Just the idea of computers was like, "whoa, I'm eleven hundred years old." I had trouble adjusting to the idea of Lutherans.

Tara: I go online sometimes, but everyone's spelling is really bad. It's depressing.

• Anya: Anyway, I took the money from working for Giles, and I tripled it.

• Anya: (about April) She speaks with a strange evenness and selects her words a shade too precisely.

Xander: Well, some of us like that kind of thing in a girl.

• Spike: Bloody hell! You threw me through a window! What's that about?

April: You cannot make those suggestions to me. I have a boyfriend. Warren is my boyfriend.

Spike: You know what? My bleedin' sympathies to Warren.

• Buffy: Ow. I don't know about you guys, but I've had it with super-strong little women who aren't me.

• Giles: Dear god, Buffy, there's only so much I can take. We're going to have to change the system. A fourteen-year-old's too old to be babysat, and it's not fair on her.

Buffy: What'd she make you do?

Giles: Um, well, we listened to aggressively cheerful music sung by people chosen for their ability to dance, then we ate cookie dough and talked about boys.

Buffy: I'm sorry. I'm very, very sorry, but if it makes you feel any better, my "fun time Buffy party night" involved watching a robot throw Spike through a window, so if you wanna trade... No, wait. I wouldn't give that memory up for anything.

• Giles: And you're certain she was a robot?

Buffy: Absolutely.

Tara: She practically had "Genuine Moulded Plastic" stamped on her ass. Just trying a little spicy talk.

• Xander: Beautiful girl with.... no other thought but to please you... willing to do anything. Too many girls. I miss Oz. He'd get it. He wouldn't say anything, but he'd get it.

• Dawn: A robot? Really? Was it Ted? 'Cause they always said there could have been more than one of him.

• Giles: We are not your friends. We are not your way to Buffy. There is no way to Buffy. Clear out of here. And, Spike, this thing - get over it.

Spike: I don't know what you mean.

Giles: Yes, you do. Move the hell on.

• Buffy: She's voice-activated?

Warren: Well, I made it so that if she heard me and she didn't answer, it causes this kind of feedback.

Buffy: Wait, if you call her and she doesn't answer, it hurts her? You're one creepy little dweeb, Warren.

• Buffy: She growls? You made her so she growls?

• Xander: I think I've actually turned into someone you want around after a crazed robot attack.

Buffy: And if you ever start your own business, you have your slogan right there.

• Xander: Robots are the strangest people.

Buffy: No, people are the strangest people. I mean, look at me obsessing about being with someone. It's like... I don't need a guy right now. I need me. I need to get comfortable being alone with Buffy.
