Plot Overview

While the good Captain is out of town on business, Les and Tim are left to solve a bizarre murder at Hawthorne's Department Store. A maintenance man is found dead in the store's front window, bludgeoned to death with a hammer, and the detectives discover that the victim had a criminal record under another name and was romantically involved with two female executives at the store.

Trivia

The Show

Gene Barry barely appears in this episode--Burke is in Chicago to address a Police Chief's convention, so it's up to Tim and Les to solve the murder without the Captain. They do get full use of the limo, however.

Allusions and References

Sgt. Ames takes a ride on a Hollywood tour bus to speak to the driver, whose car was parked outside the murder scene. As the driver passes houses, he entertains the passengers by doing imitations of the celebrities who own the houses. He first does Jimmy Cagney, then points out Kirk Douglas's house and proceeds to do an imitation of Douglas in the classic "Champion". An older lady interrupts him, saying that she took the tour yesterday with a different driver and that driver told his riders that that same house belonged to Edd Byrnes. His response? 'Yeah, lady, but I don't do Edd Byrnes!' The actor playing that 'Kookie' bus driver? None other than...Edd Byrnes!
