Cowboy Bebop is an anime drama that first aired on TV Tokyo in Japan. However, this run was mishandled and eventually cancelled until it was picked back up in 1998 by WOWOW, a Japanese satellite service. The series centers around a crew of space bounty hunters who track down fugitives for a price. The original crew of the Cowboy Bebop, Jet Black and Spike Spiegel, eventually wind up with a dog, a child and a woman from the past joining up with them, much to the chagrin of Spike. The series as a whole is extremely layered with each main character (with the exception of Ein, the dog) getting about equal time to unravel their past, their motivations and what's coming ahead of them. The series is rated TV-MA, primarily for graphic violence and adult content.
Aside from the deep and engrossing plot, the series is best known for its use of free-flowing animation and stories, combined with American styled jazz music. The music of the series is as integral to each episode as the characterization, as would be expected by a show with "Bebop" in the title. The music of the entire series is composed by Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts and has spawned several soundtracks. The music has a remarkable ability to change the scene's mood and definition of a scene and is one of the most noticeable qualities of the series.
Although the series ended in 1998, it gained international notoriety when it became one of the launch programs for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block of animation in 2001. It also spawned a movie called Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door, although the subtitle was shortened to Cowboy Bebop: The Movie in American releases due to licensing rights issues.
