Biography
Beginning acting as a young child at the Gaiety Theatre Dublin, he trained at Dublin's Abbey Theatre and went on to work in countless stage productions, from Shakespeare to Beckett to Yeats. His first screen role came in the 1957 film The Mail Van Murder, although he would appear in dozens of movies and TV shows in the years since, including Doctor Who, Fawlty Towers and the miniseries Scarlett in TV, and in film, appearances in such titles as the original 1969 version of The Italian Job, A Man of No Importance starring Albert Finney and The MatchMaker starring Janeane Garofalo and Denis Leary. With his lean, lanky build and thick accent, he frequently played stereotypical Irishmen. His two most famous roles would come in the late 1990s and early 2000s: First as Michael O'Sullivan in the critically acclaimed and internationally popular 1998 Irish film Waking Ned Devine, and second as Grandpa Joe in the 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
He lived in Dublin with his wife, actress Laurie Morton, with whom he had two children: son David and daughter Miriam and their dog Max.
