History
Pre-1998
The first original Doctor Who audio release was the 1976 children's LP Doctor Who and the Pescatons, starring Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor. Later the same year, Baker appeared in the education one-shot Exploration Earth, the first broadcast radio drama starring the Doctor. However - already in 1974 Jon Pertwee had appeared as the 3rd Doctor in a 10 minute radio short, Glorious Goodwood, which remained unaired until it was included in a 2005 CD release. A third radio oddity, comedy/parody Whatever Happened to Susan Foreman? aired in 1994.
Three regular Doctor Who radio serials aired during the 1980's and 1990's: 1985's Slipback starring Colin Baker as the 5th Doctor, and 1993's The Paradise of Death and 1996's The Ghosts of N-Space, both starring Jon Pertwee as the 3rd Doctor.
The Pescatons, Slipback, The Paradise of Death and The Ghosts of N-Space were all novelized as parts of the regular Doctor Who novel series - the first three were included in the Target Novelizations, while the fourth became a part of the The Missing Adventures series.
BBC productions since 1998
In 1998 BBC Books began to publish a series of short story anthology books, Short Trips, most of which were also released in audiobooks. The audio versions did however also included three original stories: Degrees of Truth, Bounty and Virgil.
In 2002-2003 three audio serials where released on BBC's website, alongside illustrations, with Sylvester McCoy, Colin Baker and Paul McGann starring as the Doctor in one serial each. In late 2003, a fourth webcast, the animated serial Scream of the Shalka followed.
From 2009 to 2011 three original serials, starring Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor were released on CD, and in 2013 - celebrating the show's 50th anniversary - 11 single CD-stories, Destiny of the Doctor, each narrated by one of each Doctor's companion, voiced by the original actors, were released.
Starting in 2008, BBC Books began publishing original audiobooks in their New Series Adventures, alongside audio versions of the regular novels.
Big Finish Productions

The following year they began producing Doctor Who dramas, with Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, and - eventually - Tom Baker, all returning to the role of the Doctor.
