Referbacks
- While still disorientated, the Doctor addresses Adric as "Brigadier" and "Jamie", and Tegan as "Vicki" and "Jo". He mentions his past foes the Ice Warriors as well as K9, as if they were present and as well as visiting Alzarius (Full Circle) and Logopolis (Logopolis). He also channels his past incarnations when he urges Tegan and Nyssa not to "reverse the polarity of the neutron flow" (a la The Third Doctor and toys with a recorder (a signature item of The Second Doctor). In addition to briefly adopting the persona of the Second Doctor, he also adopts the persona of The First Doctor when wandering through the TARDIS, grasping his lapels, referring to Adric as "boy", and the characteristic laugh. He also mentions that Romana keeps telling him "to take a holiday," as she did during his fourth incarnation.
Trivia
The Show
- First time in the series the Doctor is credited as such instead of "Dr. Who" or "Doctor Who".
- While the Portreeve is listed in the credits as being played by Neil Toynay, it is actually Tony Ainley as "Neil Toynay" is an anagram of his name. This was done to hide that the Portreeve is the Master while also playing on how the Master's would use either anagrams or synonyms for "Master" as aliases.
Behind the Scenes
- Footage from the final moments of Logopolis were not only reedited, but also re-scored with more upbeat music to signify the "birth" of the Fifth Doctor.
- M.C. Escher received a dedication in the novelisation due to the influence on the story's visual design.
- Patrick Troughton visited the set and stood in during camera rehearsals while Davison was off filming for the series Sink or Swim.
- When filming the scene where the Doctor eats a piece of celery, Davison immediately spat it out on the first take, due to actually having an intense dislike of the vegetable.
