Plot Overview

The episode begins with Quahog 5 news anchors Tom Tucker and Diane Simmons leading off the newscast with renowned astrologist Stephen Hawking's discovery of a new black hole at the edge of the Milky Way solar system. Meanwhile, Peter learns he has been summoned for jury duty and feels special, until Brian sets him straight that everyone will be summoned at some point in their lives; a disappointed Peter then schemes unsuccessfully to be dismissed from the jury, although he remains a pain in everyone else's side.

Later that evening, Peter returns home as Tucker and Simmons are updating the "black hole" story, revealing that the hole is quickly expanding and will suck up and destroy the Earth within the next 24 hours. Everyone becomes frantic over the news, including:

  • Mayor West punching the constellation Orion, following the stars aligning to show the Orion Pictures company logo, before bemoaning the failure of several of their most-expensive productions.
  • Herbert - wearing just a jock strap - making his latest (and to date, most overt) attempt to have sex with Chris. It is unclear whether Chris accepted his proposition.
  • Quagmire, seeking permission to have sex with Bonnie Swanson, lying to Joe that he's never had sex in his life. A few hours later, he admits his lie and dances a jig. Joe happily and nonchalantly responds, "That's our Quagmire!"
  • Instead of spending his last precious few hours with his family, Peter doing frivolous and stupid things, most notably stealing a lion from the local zoo.

During the final minute of the countdown to the Earth's end, the Griffins hug in front of the television and share some tender words. It is then when Peter thoughtlessly and foolishly, perhaps believing he'll never have to face any consequences, lets slip to Lois a "secret hatred" for being in his children's presence. Moments later, the countdown ends... but the Earth is not destroyed and everyone is alive and well.

Tucker and Simmons then smile and reveal the story about the black hole and Earth's imminent destruction was an April Fool's prank. An outraged Brian shouts out "You dicks!" before leaving to go to the soup kitchen (to follow up on an earlier promise), but Lois is even more angry. Not at a hoax that should have gotten Tucker and Simmons fired and blacklisted, but at Peter's insensitive remarks from just moments earlier. Meg, Chris and Stewie are crushed and can't understand why their father would say such a thing, but after Lois sends them away, she demands an explanation from Peter. After reminding Peter that he got himself into this situation, Peter is left to try to win back the respect of his children.

Peter's first attempt, by trying to learn their interests, fails to win over his children. Things are made worse when he uses the methamphetamine he hoped to share with Chris. Finally exasperated, Peter makes a humble apology to his children, but they see it as shallow and insincere. Left with no option, Peter literally tries to buy back their love by presenting them with an Xbox 360, which finally succeeds... until Peter hogs the Xbox.
