Stewie Loves Lois is the first episode of the fifth season of Family Guy, and the eighty-first episode overall.

The episode title refers to the story where Stewie — who forever has been obsessed with killing Lois — becomes overly enamored with his mother after Lois salvages his teddy bear, Rupert, from a vicious dog. However, this is the subplot to the episode's main story, where Peter sues his doctor after undergoing a prostate exam, totally misconstruing it as a sexual advance.

Plot Overview

A flu epidemic strikes Quahog, and the health department announces the availability of shots. When Peter goes to get his vaccine, Dr. Hartman tells him that the shots are in short supply and thus, the elderly get first priority. Peter becomes upset and argues with Hartman before "accidentally" tripping and falling into the vaccine-filled syringe. The doctor is upset but realizes there is little he can do about it now.

Hartman then realizes that Peter has not had his prostate exam. Unaware of what a prostate exam is or that it involves a physician sticking his finger up the anus, Peter consents to having one. When Hartman begins the anal probe, Peter is shocked and believes that the doctor was trying to molest him. Hartman tries to explain, but a traumatized Peter — still naked after having undressed for the exam — flees the hospital and runs home, breaking down into Lois' arms.

Lois tries to explain the concept of a prostate exam, but is unable to reason with Peter, who grows more convinced — seemingly by the second — that he was the victim of a sexual assault, and after watching TV has a nervous breakdown (which gets worse when he walks by Chris holding a foam finger and the Evil Monkey as he is pointing at him). Peter sharing his experience with his buddies at the Drunken Clam only reinforces the idea that he was raped; Cleveland, Joe and Quagmire all also claim they were sexually assaulted by Hartman when they had their prostate exams. Peter decides the only way he can get over his "ordeal" is to sue Hartman for malpractice.

During the trial, Peter grossly exaggerates the incident and graphically characterizes Hartman as a monster and sexual fiend; this is shown as a grainy, black and white "flashback." The judge — knowing what a prostate exam involves, and secure and mature enough to realize that sex is not the objective — tries telling Peter that his own exam was uneventful. But then, Peter somehow triggers a false memory from the judge. Without hearing Hartman's side of the story, the judge revokes his medical license.

Peter and his buddies celebrate their victory at the Drunken Clam, but then his friends become concerned that Peter is excusing himself too frequently to use the bathroom. Seamus appears and tells Peter that he may have an infected prostate and really does need to see the doctor. He is the one that is finally able to impress on Peter the importance of a prostate exam, that it is an accepted medical procedure and that the anal probe that is part of it has absolutely nothing to do with sex.

Peter decides to have his exam, but he is unable to find a doctor willing to perform the procedure, since all of them are aware of who he is and that he had successfully sued Hartman. Peter is forced to track Hartman down at his home and, after a disguise fails to fool the good doctor, beg for forgiveness. Hartman resists at first, but then realizes he needs to abide by the Hippocratic Oath and perform the procedure.

In the end, Peter convinces the judge to reinstate Hartman's medical license. Hartman is just kidding when he tells Peter afterward that he really was planning to rape him.

Subplot

Lois takes Stewie to the park to play. While playing with his teddy bear, Rupert, a vicious dog that is running at large runs on the scene and grabs the bear, chewing it in its jaws. Lois fights off the dog and, before shooing it off, makes it drop the toy. Rupert is shredded to pieces, but Lois decides to fix it the best she can. When she presents the repaired Rupert to Stewie, an overjoyed Stewie decides to rethink all of the bad things he wanted to do to his mother. Now, instead of being a homicidal infant, Stewie is now an attention-craving toddler who yearns for his mother. At first, Lois complies and begins bonding with Stewie, but Brian warns that too much attention can be just as bad as not enough.

Lois eventually becomes frustrated and exhausted by Stewie's constant demand for attention, but this causes her to have bad dreams about harming Stewie. Eventually, she takes Brian's advice ... but it backfires on her when an attention-demanding Stewie falls down the stairs and breaks his arm. Stewie shakes off the injury and refuses to accept Lois' apologize, vowing once again to kill her off.

Allusions and References

  • The Accused — Peter's depiction of his prostate exam in Dr. Hartman's office is patterened after the rape scene in the 1988 movie starring Jodie Foster. Peter fills Foster's role as Sarah Tobais, while Hartman's actions are similar to those of Tobais' drunken assailants.
  • All in the Family — The end credits are a near frame-by-frame animated re-creation of the closing sequence of the 1970s groundbreaking sitcom starring Carroll O'Connor. Peter states that "Family Guy was videotaped in front of a live studio audience," referring to the laugh track used in the epilogue scene.
  • Finger gags — After Peter's "traumatic" visit to the doctor, he and Brian watch TV. Peter has a breakdown after viewing the following:
    • E.T. the Extra Terrestrial — One of the 1982 movie's iconic scenes — E.T. extending a finger to touch it to that of his friend, Elliott — is seen.
    • Freddy Got Fingered — A commercial bumper for the critically panned 2001 film starring Tom Green is shown.
    • Yellow Pages — The ending to a commercial for the telephone directory section is shown, along with the slogan "Let your fingers do the walking."
  • Kermit the Frog — A gag involves a gun-toting Kermit trying to shoo a boater out of his Louisiana swamp.
  • Robin — A gag, paying homage to the DC Comics superhero, shows the Boy Wonder showing up to rescue four teen-aged girls who are trapped in a car teetering over a cliff, and the girls' concern that he would be unable to save them.
  • Star Trek — A "Dr. McCoy" is one of the doctors who refuses to see Peter, remarking, "I'm a doctor, not a patsy," a nod to the Dr. McCoy character from the 1960s TV series. Also, a cutaway gag features Mr. Sulu in a movie based on the Robert Louis Stevenson novel Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
  • What's Happening!! — A Native American-version of the 1970s sitcom is shown, with the three main teen-aged characters uttering their signature lines in Native American language.
