Genshiken is a comedy anime based on a manga published in the monthly magazine Afternoon. The program follows the adventures of a club at a Japanese university that specializes in nothing in particular, but is filled with an eclectic collection of otaku (geeks) nonetheless.

Kanji Sasahara has been an otaku for the longest time, but he's always been afraid to admit it for fear of becoming even more of an outcast. When he starts college and joins the Society for the Study of Visual Culture — aka Genshiken — they're not only willing to accept him but are proud of their otaku ways and ready to shout them out to the world. This policy doesn't sit too well with Saki Kasukabe, another college freshman who thinks she's found the man of her dreams, hunky and cute. But to her dismay, he's an otaku. Despite this setback, she isn't willing to give him up, and will do whatever it takes to pull him away from the Genshiken.

The members of the Genshiken are big fans of a show called Kujibiki Unbalance, and three real episodes were produced, complete with opening theme song (which appears at the start of the first episode of Genshiken). Clips from these episodes are interspersed throughout the season of Genshiken, most notably displayed on the television in the club room during the end credits. A full series was just produced, with three additional new episodes of Genshiken attached as a special OVA. A full second season for Genshiken has just been announced and will air separately in late 2007.
