Season Two of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex premiered on January 1, 2004. The series was renamed Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG for this season and initially made available on Animax. Two new episodes were added to the pay per view monthly until May 7, 2005. On April 12, 2005, the season began broadcast on the terrestrial network Nippon TV.
Unlike the previous season, 2nd GIG is broken up into three different sections rather than two. Episodes designated as "Individual" are connected to the Individual Eleven storyline, "Dual" episodes are tied into the first storyline as well as the "Cabinet Intelligence Service & Gouda" story, and Dividual episodes are disconnected for either story. The Individual story is covered by episodes 5, 11-12, 16, 19-21 and 23-26. The Duel story is made up of episodes 4, 7, 9 and 22.
The second Ghost in the Shell season takes a deeper look at the universe in which Section-9 exists. It takes place six months after the first season and examines some of the historic events which have formed Japanese society in 2032, particularly the refugee groups created by World War III and World War IV. One such group, dubbed the Individual Eleven, and their enigmatic leader Kuze are investigated by Section-9 when they learn that there's a greater motive behind their suicide attack.
The series was licensed by Bandai Entertainment in 2005 for an American release. The dubbed episodes began broadcast on Adult Swim on November 19, 2005.
