- The character was originally intended to older, serving as a mother/son type of relationship. The intent was to get Angela Lansbury, but when she wasn't available, Bedelia was rewritten to be much younger and her relationship to Hannibal changed with it.
- Anderson was considered to assume the role of Clarice Starling in the film adaptation Hannibal.
- The character was created for the show, making her the only main or supporting character in the series not to have an analogue in the book, although her arc in first half of Season 3 does have parallels to the character of Clarice Starling in the novel Hannibal.
