Plot Overview

The heroes pick up four months after the situation with Sylar.

  • Mohinder Suresh Voice-over: "The sun rises on a new dawn. Yet few of us realize the debt we owe to those responsible for this. To those who dwell among us anonymous, seemingly ordinary, whom destiny brought together to repair, to heal, to save us from ourselves. And they're still out there among us in the shadows, in the light. We pass them on the street without a thought, never suspecting, never knowing. Do they even know yet? That they are bound together by a common purpose a glaring reality to be extraordinary? And when destiny does anoint them, how do they hide from it? How long can they dwell in the shadows before either fate or their own flawed humanity draws them out into the light again and how will they know what awaits them when it finally does?"
  • Cairo, Egypt. Mohinder Suresh is speaking a symposium on the "powered" individuals who walk among them, saying that though they are granted extraordinary abilities, they are also born with a curse. That curse takes the form of a plague which slowly deactivates and kills the unique individuals, which would deprive humanity of its evolutionary advantages. He urges everyone sitting with him, which is very few, to take up his cause and try to find a cure to the disease. After his lecture, he's offered a job by a man who is the lone person in the room who knows that Mohinder is speaking truthfully and isn't just insane like the others think.
  • San Cristobal, Honduras. Maya and Alejandro are fleeing from the Honduran police when they jump a fence and break into an empty house to escape capture. Maya asks if they must run more, as they've been running for 800 miles now. But Alejandro, her apparent brother, explains that if they stopped, many people would die. He promises that by Tuesday, they'll be safe in America. They leave the house and continue on their path, passing a wanted poster with their likenesses and an accusation of homicide.
  • Costa Verde, California. Far from their old home in Odessa, Claire and Noah Bennet have set up a new life in California where Claire has just registered for high school. She is now "Claire Butler" and is terrified of jumping into the "shark-infested waters of 11th grade." Noah reminds her that in order to keep the company off their tails, she must be entirely unextraordinary which includes a ban on cheerleading. She uses this situation to get a car of her own so that getting dropped off won't draw attention. And, of course, in her first action as a new student is to nearly be hit by a car when the bell rings.
  • Outside Kyoto, Japan. Meanwhile, 330 years in the past in the year 1671, Hiro Nakamura has landed in the middle of a battle between a band of warriors and a lone samurai. The archers draw back their bows, but they're all distracted by a solar eclipse. Once the shock has subsided, Hiro uses his powers to stop the arrows before they hit him. When he notices the symbol on the samurai's flag, he realizes that it's Takezo Kensei and teleports the two of them away from the bushidan.
  • Manhattan. Matt Parkman is now a member of the NYPD living in New York. He, along with a squad of police officers, are trying to diffuse a hostage situation which he can't resolve in a peaceful way. He and the other squad members bust in, shooting accomplices until he arrives at the hostage, a man and a woman. Both are saying that the other is the culprit and Parkman uses his psychic powers to find out that it's the woman who is holding the man hostage. He shoots her and suddenly bright lights flicker on overhead. The whole thing was just a training exercise for NYPD, which has secured him his position back on the force.
  • Costa Verde, California. Claire, in an instance of not understanding "unextraordinary," starts her Bunsen burner in science class and immediately puts her hand over the fire. She's caught by the very same person who nearly hit her with his car that morning, a guy named West who has all the makings of being the new Zach. He questions whether she's a robot or an alien and eventually gets his answer when she writes down the answer to the professor's first question (which no one could answer) without bothering to raise her hand and make a spectacle of herself.
  • San Cristobal, Honduras. Maya and Alejandro make it to some smugglers who offer to take them to a town within 600 miles of the American border. The driver offers to let Maya sit up front with him, with a clear ulterior motive in mind, but the two refuse and get in back with the many other people who are being smuggled out of the country.
  • Manhattan. On a school playground, Matt Parkman picks up Molly, whom he has assumed guardianship over. The two start off towards home, but Matt is pulled aside by the teacher who informs him about Molly falling asleep in class and having nightmares. She also questions his life's stability due to his gunshot wounds and divorce. Matt insists that Molly is fine, but the teacher shows him several drawings she's done with a pair of eyes and the ubiquitous symbol on them.
  • Manhattan. Elsewhere, Kaito Nakamura and Ando are still searching for Hiro even though Ando is having doubts about Hiro ever coming back. Kaito refuses to give up because he has a legacy to hand down to Hiro and is a patient man. When he opens his newspaper, a torn photo of Kaito with the symbol scrawled on it falls out. He demands to know where Ando got the paper and tells him that he'll be dead in 24 hours.
  • Peters Apt, New York. An exceedingly scruffy looking Nathan Petrelli is surprised to find his mother in his apartment, going through his possessions. She demands that he let Peter's memory go and accept that he's dead, but he refuses. She chastises him for not going through with her plans to secure power for the entire family, but he kicks her out and calls her evil. Outside of the apartment, Angela Petrelli also finds a picture similar to Kaito's.
  • Outside Kyoto, Japan. Hiro has the wrong man. Though he believed that he was saving Takezo Kensei, he actually saved a man who owes Kensei 50 ryo. He runs away when Hiro says that he was about to be killed. Another man steps out from behind a tree with a crossbow and demands to know what Hiro did. He blames him for getting in the way of his bounty and is taken aback by Hiro's declaration of fandom, especially when he mentions stealing the sword. Kensei takes off his mask and Hiro is just as surprised at the face he sees; Kensei is a white guy.
  • Copy Kingdom, Costa Verde, California. In his ongoing journey through mediocrity, "Noah Butler" is working in a copy shop. His overly excitable manager chastises him for not "wanting it" enough and not giving his entire life to the paper business.
  • Cairo, Egypt. The man from earlier and Mohinder are sitting down over tea to talk about the origins of "The Company," which claims to act on a moral imperative for the greater good of the species. The man cuts to the chase by saying that he won't interfere with Matt Parkman's guardianship of Molly, but he does say that he and the company are working for the betterment of humanity and that they're concerned that the virus which killed Shanti will crossover to the regular population. When Mohinder questions their ability to fund the research he would need to conduct, the man turns a piece of silverware into gold.
  • Suresh's Apartment, Brooklyn. Matt and Molly are holed up in Mohinder's apartment in Brooklyn. He orders pizza and the two have a conversation about the drawings that Molly drew in school. She tries to dodge the conversation and is clearly agitated when Matt tries to press the matter.
  • Honduras. Alejandro and Maya are still riding in the back of the smugglers' truck and looking over a book, Chandra Suresh's book, they've been carrying with them. Maya hopes that finding the man who wrote the book will mean that they'll also be able to get a cure for her own powers. It's implied that whatever homicide that the two may have been involved with in Honduras was an accident caused by Maya. The truck stops and Alejandro is taken from the back and told that he needs to pay more money or let the driver do whatever lewd thing he has in mind for his sister. He refuses and is beaten unconscious by the driver and left to fend for himself while the truck drives off without him.
  • Costa Verde, California. During gym class, Claire continues to make a scene by defending a girl from being abused by cheerleaders, but still can't convince West that she's not a robot. When she returns from getting the birdie, she has to stop the cheerleaders from making Martha do a backflip off the nearby tower and inevitably getting hurt. Claire decides to take the hit for her, but reconsiders her father's warning and backs down.
  • Suresh's Apartment, Brooklyn. Since Molly wouldn't tell him about the nightmares or the drawings, Matt tries to read her mind while she's sleeping. He hears a voice say "I can see you" in her dream when she wakes up. Matt asks her to tell him where the man is, but Molly won't let Matt get killed by whoever is in her dreams.
  • Costa Verde, California. Now that nobody's around, Claire decides to do the backflip after all. She lands it, but because there's no pad on the floor, she breaks her leg. She manages to snap it back into place and heal herself just before West shows up to ask why she's still in the gym.
  • Copy Kingdom, Costa Verde, California. Noah has decided that he's not willing to deal with his manager's attitude anymore. He flips him over the table he's sitting at and tells him in no uncertain terms that he will work when and how he feels like. The manager accepts his offer, not that he has much of a choice in the first place.
  • Outside Kyoto, Japan. Hiro is still coping with the fact that Kensei is from England, but Kensei is delighted to find that Hiro can speak English. He explains that he stayed on the island during one of the few instances in which Western ships were allowed into port. He claims that he only wishes to find his fortune, which mainly comes from fighting off bandits using underhanded tactics. Hiro tells Kensei that he read about him as a boy and names off some events, none of which have happened (especially saving Otsu, which is presently on fire).
  • Manhattan. Kaito Nakamura and Ando are on the balcony overlooking the city where Isaac's apartment once was when Kaito tells Ando that a powerful person is coming, possibly one connected to his past, to kill him and that he'd like Ando to leave. Ando refuses and tells Kaito that he must stay and fight for the sake of Hiro. Kaito asks that Ando find him a sword when Angela appears. Kaito suggests that someone is after them, now that Charles Deveaux, Linderman and Mr. Petrelli are all dead. There are only 9 surviving this group that has been previously alluded to and the photos that Kaito and Angela received are pieces of a single picture. Kaito tells Angela that she has done nothing to help her son and seek redemption and suggests that she disappear before something bad can happen to her.
  • Outside Kyoto, Japan. Hiro is told by some fleeing peasants that bandits have taken everything they own. Concerned that he has accidentally broken time, Hiro tries to convince Kensei that he'll be rewarded with gold and a beautiful woman but his story is interrupted by that woman of legend who takes back her father's sword (and payment of protection). He gets even more excitable when the woman leaves to go rescue her father, but only winds up being punched in the face by Kensei.
  • Costa Verde, California. Over dinner, Claire lies her family about skating by unnoticed (as does her father). Everyone is claiming to adjust nicely to the change of location, although their mother is clearly still quite unhinged. After a bit of an awkward silence, Noah gets a phone call from Mohinder updating him on the company and he makes a reference to bringing it down from the inside.
  • Honduras: Alejandro finally catches up with the truck that left him behind, but finds nothing but dead bodies with blood streaming from their eyes. Nearby, Maya is crying and taking responsibility for accidentally killing everyone. They get into the truck and drive off, leaving the dead smugglers behind, with the intention of burying everyone who died in back.
  • Costa Verde, California/Manhattan. Claire calls Nathan from her bedroom, hoping to find some solidarity in pretending to be who she really is. Nathan tells her not to call him again and that he doesn't have the answers that she seeks. When he hangs up, Nathan looks to the side and sees a burnt, disfigured Peter. When he looks back, he only sees his reflection. Meanwhile, outside Claire's room, West is watching her from a nearby tree. But it turns out that he too has powers and can fly.
  • Manhattan. On the roof of the building, Kaito is confronted by a person wearing a hooded sweatshirt. He says that he never suspected that it would be that person, but gets no response. When Ando shows up with the sword, Kaito is attacked by the hoodie wearer and falls to his death when tackled off of the roof.
  • Cork, Ireland: A night watchman at a freight depot is knocked out cold by a gang of men looking to steal a crate full of iPods in container 9109. When they open the container, however, they don't find iPods at all. Inside the crate is Peter, who is chained to the wall. When one of them tries to hit him, Peter zaps him with an electrical shock and claims to not know who, or what, he is.
