Plot Overview

New Year's Eve is a wild ride as Ted rents a limo for a night of party-hopping with the gang.

It's New Year's Eve 2005 and Ted has rented a limo for the night in order to live it up with his friends, sans Robin because of her pre-existing plans with her boyfriend. The remaining four decide to go to five parties in three hours and return to ring in (or, as Ted put it, "rock in") the new year at the best one. After Robin leaves, they set off for Party #1 where they pick up Mary Beth, a woman who works with Ted. Ted mistaken believes she has a thing for him, but it turns out that she's just extremely friendly. Barney also manages to pick someone up, a drunk woman named Natalya from some eastern European country.

At the second party, they leave quickly and abandon Natalya. Soon after instructing Ranjit to drive to Party #3, Ted gets a call from Robin who has been stood up by Derrick. They decide to turn around an pick up Robin before moving on to the third party. However, Ted's crush on Robin is still painfully evident and begins to fall to her every whim, throwing them further off schedule. Lily also gets out of the limo to change her shoes to a less painful pair. After rolling by Grey's Papaya, the remaining Limo party pick up a guy who they presume to be Moby and decide to go to his party. Marshall, more concerned about finding Lily, leaves the limo to go to Party #3 and find her. They realize they've made a huge mistake when Not Moby pulls out a gun he calls Janice.

Not Moby gets out of the car when they reach his party and Marshall's phone (which he forgot in the limo) rings. Lily turns out to be upstairs at Not Moby's party and flees once she sees that he has a gun. It turns out that his party was actually Party #4. What are the odds? Barney nearly attempts evacuating the limo after realizing that Not Moby stole his get-psyched mix and things are further complicated when Ranjit blows a tire. Mary Beth decides to leave too during the process of fixing the flat because of Ted obviously not being over Robin.

Robin gets a call from Derrick and Marshall returns after Lily starts screaming his name from the sunroof. He was also at Not Moby's party, where he found and stole Barney's mix. Marshall sings the praises of Party #5 and, just in time, Ranjit declares that the flat is fixed. Also, Natalya was asleep in the front seat the entire time. Of course, they get stuck in traffic and ring in the New Year from the limo. Much to Ted's chagrin, Derrick shows up out of nowhere and spoils Ted's night. He gets out of the limo, feeling like the odd man out and Robin chases him down to go through with their deal that if all else fails they would kiss at midnight.

Notes

Arc Advancement

Happenings

Characters

  • Ted and Robin: Ted and Robin kiss at midnight. Although, persuing this is somewhat of a dead end because the viewer already knows that "Aunt Robin" does not wind up getting married to Ted.

Referbacks

  • 1x01 - Pilot: Ranjit the Limo Driver was formerly Ranjit the Cab Driver from the end of the first episode. Those events are briefly mentioned when Robin asks Ted how he knows the driver.

Memorable Moments

Quotes

  • Barney: No, we are already behind schedule. Ted, come on, we have an hour and a half before midnight and I don't want to be kissing Ranjit!
Ranjit: You don't know what you are missing.
  • Barney: Oh, sure, laugh. Laugh for Barney Stinson! Laugh for the sad clown trapped on his whirling carousel of suits and cigars and bimbos and booze. Round and round it goes, and where’s it all heading? Nowhere.
