KWHY-TV is an ethnic independent serving the Los Angeles television market, broadcasting on digital channel 42 and using PSIP to map as virtual channel 22. It will become the flagship affiliate of the Spanish-marketed MundoFox network when it starts up on August 13, 2012.
The station opened on analog channel 22 as KBIC in 1954 but had no programming apart from a constant test pattern. In 1962 it opened as KIIC, with programming geared to African-American audiences. It ran a year then went silent. It re-emerged in 1964 as independent KPOL. Two years later it changed calls to the current KWHY and furnished ticker information from the New York Stock Exchange. After the close of business at Dow Jones, KWHY reverted to standard programming.
In 1991, after losing money in its business programming venture, KWHY became an affiliate of the Spanish network Televisa. It was owned by NBC-Universal for a time in a duopoly with Univision affiliate KVEA. NBC-Universal plans to sell KWHY to Meruelo to facilitate its affiliation with MundoFox.
