Character History
Richard Avery was born and raised outside Washington D.C. His big brother, Philip, died in an motorcycle accident when Richard was 15 years old. Richard them met and married Laura Murphy while finishing his law studies in the prestigious Georgetown University. After the birth of their first son, Jason, the Averys moved in Knots Landing in California where he worked as lawyer with a firm called Pinous, Simpson and Lyle.
Richard found his lawyer career very frustrating. Richard hoped to become a partner in the firm, but he did not see anything coming since he didn't have much clients. Then one day, a prestigious lawyer from Chicago contacted Richard about some business. After this lawyer asked him to join his firm, Richard informed his owners whom he resigned even though they proposed to him to keep it an association. Actually, his work in Chicago didn't pay much and he was found without work. He passed his frustration onto Laura. At the same time, Laura succeeded in her job as a real estate agent and basically ran the household. This made Richard feel like less of a man so he had some affairs. Most notably, he had an affair with Sid's newly arrived sister, Abby Cunningham.
Richard finally found a job but its owner wanted him to arrange evenings between the customers and prostitutes. When this was exposed, the owner blamed Richard, who ends up losing his job. Richard then became depressed and Laura ended up leaving him. Realizing then how much he liked her, Richard tried to speak to Laura but without success. Out of work and wholly depressed, Richard took Jason and Laura as a hostage in their own home. After turning himself in, he was sent in a psychiatric hospital. When he got better, Laura discovered that she was pregnant and she decided, for the sake of the newborn baby, to return to Richard. They then had a son named Daniel, and Richard wanted to get back to work. So he decided to open a restaurant called "Daniel".
The restaurant was a success but he needed money to keep it going. He want to Abby, who accepted in the condition that he let Ciji Dunne sing there. Ciji became very close to Laura and Richard became jealous, thinking that his wife had an lesbian affair with Ciji. After the death of Ciji, Richard realized that his marriage was a failure and decided to leave Laura. He paid off the loans on the house and the restaurant, gave the house to Laura, took a photograph of his family and left.
Richard moved east and opened another restaurant. He then married a woman whose personality was not as strong as that of Laura's. Years later, Laura found him and brought Jason and Daniel to him. While she was over there, Laura confided in Richard that she was dying and asked him to keep the boys. Today, Richard still runs his restaurant and raises his two children with the assistance of his second wife.
