Behind the Scenes
This episode originally aired on the NBC network through the facilities of WBKB-TV Chicago, two months after the Midwest and Eastern networks were linked for live broadcasts via coaxial cable.
Allusions and References
- The episode was inspired by, and takes cues from, a chart published in the April 11, 1949 issue of Life Magazine of "a new U.S. social structure". Life's write-up was inspired by Russell Lynes, editor of Harper's Magazine, and the magazine collaborated with Lynes to illustrate the concept with a tongue-in-cheek two-page chart, which Kukla and Fran frequently refer to during the episode.
- The term "middlebrow" was originally coined by the British satire magazine Punch in 1925 and used disparagingly by modernist cultural critics, but the Life article popularized the term with the American general public.
Memorable Moments
Quotes
- Ollie: It's all very silly. You can't classify people that way, and especially us.
- Fran: Well, I think if I just had to say I like this type of book and I do not like the other, or I like this type of music and I do not like that, I believe I would have to hesitate a long time, and then I don't believe I could be quite honest.
- Ollie: No, the thing is we kind of like everything. We're all mixed up, and I think that's the way to be.
