Plot Overview
When the Great Central Overland Mail stage breaks down on it's way to Laramie, it is an ill wind that blows. While the passengers are trying to effect repairs, Martha Chambers shoots and mortally wounds Taka, son of Pawnee Chief Yellow Knife, by mistake. Taking the wounded Indian with them, under the protestations of some of the passengers, the crippled coach manages to make it to the Sherman Relay station, putting Slim, Andy, Jess and Jonesy at risk. Fearing an attack by Yellow Knife and the Pawnee, Slim orders Jonesy and Andy to Laramie while Major David Prescott tries to save Taka's life. When Maj. Prescott's identity is revealed and the fact he was dishonorably discharged for conduct unbecoming an officer for taking up with a married woman, Martha Chambers. The relay station defenders manage to repulse the opening attack by the Pawnee but it's readily apparent to Slim.
