Episode Breakdown

  • Monologue: After some banter with Max, Conan moves into making fun of Arnold Schwarzenegger planning a two-day inauguration, because that's how long it takes for him to say the word "inauguration." Meanwhile, Britney Spears' manager is denying that she passed out at New Years Eve, devices to prevent drunk drivers from driving (i.e. "oncoming traffic") and a Muslim senator is planning to be sworn in on Thomas Jefferson's Koran. Also in the news are dolls based on Desperate Housewives and a 67 year-old woman in Spain gave birth, making her the oldest new mother in history.
  • 2006 Year in Review: With 2006 firmly behind the show, Conan decides to pay tribute to the year by looking back on some of the news events and figures which they talked to including President George W. Bush, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Donald Trump, Star Jones, John Kerry, Rush Limbaugh and Barbara Bush. Essentially it's a clip show of the Syncro-Vox interviews done in the various episodes from 2006.
  • Placido Domingo Interview: One of the Three Tenors, Placido Domingo is one of the most respected men in opera and is starring in a new opera called The First Emperor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Conan comments on how much he likes Domingo's name (which translates to "Pleasant Sunday") but Domingo insists that he hasn't followed his namesake and that he may be more fitted for "Turbulent Saturday." The main reason why Domingo is on the show is to promote his opera, but the show is sold out for the conceivable future, so it doesn't seem like he needed to be on the show at all but he takes the time to talk about the opera being filmed and directly put in theaters later on for fans who can't get tickets. Domingo tries his best to teach Conan how to sing with support but eventually Conan gives up and goes to break. After the break, Conan talks with Domingo about his female fans, his experience getting the world record for the most curtain calls, having a Muppet on Sesame Street named after him called "Placido Flamingo" and performing for over 800,000 people in Central Park.
  • Pender's Sleepblowing: Pender has fallen asleep and is blowing his trumpet in his sleep. Conan asks Max to wake him up since his blowing is disturbing the show, Max says that it's too dangerous to wake him, so they'll have to wait it out. While they're waiting for him to get up, La Bamba and Ritchie are recording him to sell to Japanese hip-hop artists with out his consent. Conan shames them for exploiting their friend until they let him in for a 30% cut.
  • Patton Oswalt Interview: Comedian Patton Oswalt comes on the show promoting nothing in particular, although he did recently participate in the Comedy Central Roast of William Shatner. He talks about his experiences in a class called "Physics for Poets" and how he shot down his teacher's one attempt to reach out to the nerds in class by putting a Star Trek related question on the final exam. Patton, in true form, told his professor that the question was impossible because Sulu fires the phasers, not Checkov. Conan brings up the woman from the monologue and Patton goes into a bit about how sometimes science is evil and wrong, which ends in a disturbing description of old people having sex. After the awful imagery, Patton says that the KFC Famous Bowl is the best thing to come out of 2006 because it's so absurd and that it's "a failure pile in a sadness bowl." He then gets up and sings a Bruce Springsteen parody about someone eating a Famous Bowl.
  • Tailspin: moe. song.

Notes

Music

  • Tailspin, performed by moe.: The song performed by moe. at the end of the episode is "Tailspin" off their 2007 album The Conch. The album is their first since 2003 and, similarly to their other jam band style albums, was partially recorded live in a large concert attended by fans of the band.

Quotes

  • Patton: What does the father say to his son when that kid is old enough to go, "Where did I come from, Dad?" And the guy's got to go, "Oh, well sit yourself down, I'll teach you all about the magic of the birds and the bees. See, when a man loves a woman very much, he heaves himself off of his hemorrhoid donut and he takes 3 Viagra, a beta blocker and an eye-dropper full of blood thinner. And then he lays on top of his beloved like a pile of laundry on top of another pile of laundry. Then, his penis, erect in defiance of God's will, enters her vagina like a chapstick entering the Luray Caverns. Then, 9 months later, she gives birth to a beautiful baby. Which I will now demonstrate by pushing this uncooked Cornish game hen through these gray drapes.
Conan: Oh god. I've always wondered why this chair is on wheels, now I know. Quickly get away from the horrible imagery.
