Episode Breakdown
- Monologue: Conan makes fun of topics in the news like Ozzy Osbourne selling his mansion "because he could never find it" and how Senator Hilary Clinton made a commercial which spoofed the series finale of The Sopranos, which her husband Bill calls "a chilling window into his personal hell." Conan also talks about how television journalists are biased because they donate to democratic candidates, Wes Craven is suing Pauley Shore (otherwise known as "the man who gave you horrible nightmares"), the American Medical Association contemplating classifying video game addiction as a disability, and complaints of Continental Airlines flight passengers who were in the air when the lavatory backed up mid-flight. Lastly, Conan mentions that Rosie O'Donnell is hoping to take over hosting The Price Is Right and has already hired stereotypically butch lesbians for her vision of the show.
- Desk Ride: Mike from Warick, New York goes on a ride with Conan out of the studio, down the steps of 30 Rockefeller Plaza and into the streets of New York City. Conan decides that they should go to Washington D.C., but when Mike uses the desk's hyperdrive, they wind up on the South Pole and are attacked by a penguin. They finally make it to Washington D.C. The two go sightseeing until they find the IRS, where they mow down some accountants. After killing the IRS employees, they stop by the White House, where the President is watching Spongebob Squarepants. Instead of disturbing him, they decide to go on a tour of the White House, but they're held up in security when a guard finds a bong allegedly owned by Mike. They leave and go to see the cherry blossoms, which are all dumped on Mike, but Conan is allergic to them and sneezes his head off momentarily (until Conan realizes how lame that bit is and takes off the blue screen mask). They then go to the zoo, where a panda humps Mike. Lastly, they go to the Air and Space Museum where they check out the flight simulator where they fly into outer space. Just when they think they've finally found some peace and quiet, Mike is again molested by the panda bear.
- Late Night Summer Concert Series: In a bid to compete with The Today Show, Late Night with Conan O'Brien decides to start their own Summer Concert Series where they have a band play in the hallway next to their studio. In that hallway, eight people are gathered to see Lyle Lovett play "It Could Be All Downhill From Here."
- John Krasinski Interview: Actor and former Late Night intern John Krasinski appears on the show to promote Licensed to Wed. Krasinski tells a story about George Clooney, whom he starred in Leatherheads with, and how a crazed fan leaped out of her car, shrieking "George" and trying to get to him. While she's chasing down Clooney, her car was still in drive until PAs jumped into the car and pulled the emergency break. To make things worse, police found her infant child was in a car seat in the backseat of her car. To contrast, he also tells a story about being in a bar where he's talking to a fan of The Office when the fan's friend abruptly stuck her fingers down his throat without any explanation. Conan changes the subject to Krasinski's big family, which leads him to talk about one day when he threw a lawn dart at his brother. When the conversation gets too dark, they finally tie it back in to the movie and show a clip from the film where Krasinski's character is forced to change the diapers of fake babies.
- Louis CK Interview: Comedian Louis CK appears on the show to promote a DVD for his special, Shameless. He does parts of his stand-up act in interview format about how better his life would be if he didn't have kids. The audience isn't with him on how much he hates being a father, but none of them have kids so he doesn't care what they think. He goes on to talk about how he went to the hospital in a bid to prove to his wife that he was too sick to deal with the kids and wound up with opium suppositories.
- 99%: The Mooney Suzuki song.
Notes
Music
- It Could Be All Downhill From Here, performed by Lyle Lovett: During the first installment of the Late Night Summer Concert Series, Lyle Lovett performed "It Could Be All Downhill From Here," a song which Lovett frequently plays live but remains unrecorded despite its popularity among fans of his music.
- 99%, performed by The Mooney Suzuki: Musical guest The Mooney Suzuki performed "99%" from their 2007 album Have Mercy, which was released earlier that week. However, because their record label (V2) was shut down during production, the album was not released on a major label like their previous efforts. Instead, it was released on Elixia Records, an independent label.
