Plot Overview
Beaver has a problem with losing his lunch money, leading Ward to warn his son not to lose his money again. Then, he gives Beaver $1.75 to spend on a needed haircut. However, Beaver loses that money before he gets to the barber shop. The barber tells Beaver to go home and get the money before he'll render services.
Afraid of what Ward will say if he admits he lost more money, Beaver turns to Wally to help him out — by giving him a haircut (for free). The 12-year-old Wally is an amateur, to say the least, and he botches the haircut (in essence, Beaver has a mohawk). Determined not to let their parents see the botched haricut, the boys decide to don stocking caps and wear them in the house all the time ... at least until Beaver's hair grows out.
When the boys sit down to dinner, Ward and June ask why the boys are wearing stocking caps. The boys claim to have joined a secret club, where one of the initiation rites involves wearing stocking caps. The folks suspect the truth but decide not to let on, waiting until after the boys are asleep to investigate. Ward confirms his suspicions (June nearly shrieks in horror) and decides to reveal his findings in the morning.
Ward calls the boys down to talk about their attempt to hide the haircut from him and June. The boys try to bluff their way out of Ward's questions, but Ward grows angrier when the boys 1. continue to insist that the stocking caps were part of a club initiation; and 2. Beaver continues to bluff. Eventually, Ward boxes Beaver into a corner and forces him to admit the truth. When Beaver tries to be honest this time, Ward says it's too late and that he and Wally need to be punished.
After sending the boys to their room to figure out a just punishment, June tells Ward that both of them bear some responsibility for Beaver's lying about the haircut (because Ward had harsly told Beaver never to lose money again or else), and that in effect made Beaver afraid to come to Ward when he lost his haircut money. Ward realizes his wife is right and, in a show of grace and mercy, decides to go easy on his sons.
