Monk and Sharona travel to a bank where the latter has banking business to take care of (including replacing her ATM card, her chequebook and her address book, all of which she had recently lost) and she drops Monk off at the entrance to the bank's underground parking garage because he feels uncomfortable about garages. When Sharona finds a space to park and leaves her car, she begins to get a feeling she is being followed when shadows go fleeting past her. Feeling uneasy about her surroundings, Sharona runs back to her car when she hears her name called, then she turns and is confronted by a bloodied and seriously injured man who has a screwdriver driven into his right ear and a knife sticking out of his chest. As the man collapses against her car, Sharona runs screaming out of the garage to retrieve Monk and call 911, but when they get back to the car, the man is nowhere to be found, nor is there even any trace of blood that would have indicated his presence there.
When the same man keeps appearing at other places where Sharona goes (including at a gas station and inside the washroom at Dr. Kroger's office after she goes to see him), she starts questioning her sanity and decides to take time away from her job as Monk's assistant and recruits a classmate named Varla from her creative writing class to take over temporarily. Monk has issues with Varla as she appears to not understand his quirks and tries to change him, but he also starts becoming suspicious about Sharona's incidents and realizes she is being targeted and gaslighted as part of a twisted murder plot - one involving Meredith Preminger, Sharona and Varla's creative writing instructor, who is plagiarizing and using an idea from a murder mystery short story of Sharona's to plot the murder of her husband, while Preminger's lover Denny Graf poses as the "murder victim" who has been following Sharona.
